SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

“Consumption May Be Regarded As Negative Production” Alfred Marshall

SDG 12: Origin, Statistics, & Reports The sustainable development goals (SDGs) are offered as a blueprint for transforming the activity on the planet towards sustainable development SDG-12 strives to break the current cycle of economic growth, resource usage and environmental degradation, which has fuelled unsustainable global development for decades The foundations of SDG-12 go back to 1972, when the Club of Rome analysed a computer simulation of a planet with limited natural resources The Limits to Growth (LTG), validated its data from 1972–2000 with real empirical data (Monnet et al. 2014)

SDG 12: Origin, Statistics, & Reports  “Our Common Future” (1987) by the Brundtland Commission (formerly World Commission on Environment and Development)  UN Conference on Environment and Development (known as the Earth Summit) in 1992 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, 10-year frameworks of programmes for the actions were introduced Sustainable development goal 12 calls for “responsible consumption and production”. Global production and consumption are significant driving factors of the global economy but have led to the destruction of the planet’s natural ecosystem and resources

SDG 12: Origin, Statistics, & Reports SDG-12 promotes resource and energy efficiency, the creation of sustainable infrastructure, increased access to green and decent employment and improved quality of life As highlighted in SDG-12, it is important to use natural resources efficiently and to protect the environment from toxic waste pollutants (UNDP 2021) Industries, water, soil, and air pollution concerns can be exceeded by the “R’s” concept: Reuse, repair, refurbish, remanufacture and repurpose are the five strategies to fulfil the function

SDG 12: Origin, Statistics, & Reports The transformation towards more responsible and sustainable consumption and production is essential to slow the effects of climate change and prevent further irreparable damage to the planet The production of materials and goods has a range of environmental impacts, and we are already witnessing the profound effects of destructive production patterns Responsible consumption and production can promote the transformation of a linear economy to a circular economy (CE) through sustainability and continuity

SDG 12: TARGETS

SDG 12: TARGETS 12-1. Implementing the 10-year Sustainable Consumption and Production Framework 12-2. Sustainable Management and Use of Natural Resources 12-3. Halve Global Per Capita Food Waste 12-4. Responsible Management of Chemicals And Wastes 12-5. Substantially Reduce Waste Generation 12-6. Encourage Companies to Adopt Sustainable Practices and Sustainability Reporting 12-7. Promote Sustainable Public Procurement Practices 12-8. Promote Universal Understanding of Sustainable Lifestyles

SDG 12. TARGETS 12-A. Support Developing Countries Scientific and Technological Capacity for Sustainable Consumption and Production 12-B. Develop and Implement Tools to Monitor Sustainable Tourism 12-C. Remove Market Distortion that Encourage Wasteful Consumption

Philippine Action In Pursuing SDG 12

Philippine Actions in Pursuing SDG 12 The Philippine Action Plan for SCP (PAP4SCP) will serve as a guiding framework to influence and steer sustainable behavior and practices across sectors and levels of government by implementing programmatic policy reforms and set of actions over the short- (2020-2022), medium- (2022-2030), and long-term (2030-2040)

Philippine Actions in Pursuing SDG 12 Establishment of a LA-MC-ICP-MS Facility - The SMARTSeas PH Project, Implemented by DENR-BMB, was developed to accelerate the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) and MPA Networks to reduce and arrest rapid degradation of marine and coastal habitats. Currently, SMARTSeas PH has five (5) project sites (with the following characteristics): Batangas -Mindoro (highest shore fish biodiversity and 8 rare coral species), Palawan (58,400 hectares or 42% of the country’s mangroves), Taxon Strait (14 species of cetaceans), Surigao-Siargao (hawksbill and green sea turtles), and Davao Gulf (feeding ground of 7 species of whales and 4 species of dolphins). One of the objectives of SMARTSeas PH is “to reduce pollution level against baseline levels” in these sites.

Philippine Actions in Pursuing SDG 12 Clean Energy – ALERT (Alternative Energy Research Trends) This program of the DOST-National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) aims to investigate alternative energy sources in the Philippines. The challenge is clear and daunting. As our country continue to modernize and industrialize, its energy needs are expected to double over the next 20 years. The challenge is to meet these needs while trying to stem accelerating greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) that contribute to climate change. Thus, researches on cleaner energy sources is very important. Above all, this program will lay out how renewable energy can save the government money, bring jobs to the country, create wealth, expand access to energy for the most vulnerable in poor communities, and foster national energy independence.

Key Takeaways “Our planet has provided us with an abundance of natural resources. But we have not utilized them responsible and currently consumed far beyond what our planet can provide. We must learn how to use and produce in sustainable ways that will reverse the harm that we have inflicted on the planet”

Thank You!!!
