EVOLUTION
•ThelandmarkeventintheevolutionoftheconceptofSDhadbeenthe
1972StockholmConference(Declarationcontaining26principlesconcerningtheenvironment
anddevelopment)onthehumanenvironmentconvenedbyUN.
•In1980,theInternationalUnionfortheConservationofNaturepublished
aworldconservationstrategythatincludedoneofthefirstreferencesto
sustainabledevelopmentasaglobalpriorityandintroducedtheterm
"sustainabledevelopment.
•UnitedNationsWorldCharterforNature,1982raisedfiveprinciplesof
conservationbywhichhumanconductaffectingnatureistobeguided
andjudged.
•In1987,theUnitedNationsWorldCommissiononEnvironmentand
DevelopmentreleasedthereportOurCommonFuture,commonlycalled
theBrundtlandReport.Thereportincludedwhatisnowoneofthemost
widelyrecognizeddefinitionsofsustainabledevelopment.

Evolution
•1992UNconferenceorRioEarthSummit.UNestablishedthecommission
onSD(CSD)inDecember1992toensureaneffectivefollowupofUNCED
andtomonitorandreportontheimplementationoftheEarthsummit
agreementatthelocal,national,regionalandinternationallevels.
•TheKyotoProtocoladoptedinDecember,1997andtheconferencesofthe
parties(COPs)heldovertheyearshavemadesomeadvancesrelatingto
clarificationofvariousaspectsoffinancingandimplementingSDglobally.
•In1997,theUNGeneralAssemblyheldaspecialsessiontoappraisethe
statusofAgenda21(Rio+5).TheAssemblyrecognizedprogressas
"uneven"andidentifiedkeytrends,includingincreasingglobalization,
wideninginequalitiesinincome,andcontinueddeteriorationoftheglobal
environment.

Evolution
•Rio+10(2002):TheJohannesburgPlanofImplementation,agreedtoattheWorldSummit
onSustainableDevelopment(EarthSummit2002),affirmedUNcommitmentto"full
implementation"ofAgenda21,alongsideachievementoftheMillenniumDevelopment
Goals.
•Rio+20(2012):In2012,attheUnitedNationsConferenceonSustainableDevelopment
theattendingmembersreaffirmedtheircommitmenttoAgenda21intheiroutcome
documentcalled"TheFutureWeWant".
•Agenda2030,alsoknownastheSustainableDevelopmentGoals,wasasetofgoals
decideduponattheUNSustainableDevelopmentSummitin2015.Ittakesallofthegoals
setbyAgenda21andre-assertsthemasthebasisforsustainabledevelopment,saying,
“WereaffirmalltheprinciplesoftheRioDeclarationonEnvironmentand
Development…”AddingontothosegoalsfromtheoriginalRiodocument,atotalof17
goalshavebeenagreedon,revolvingaroundthesameconceptsofAgenda21;
1)PEOPLE,2)PLANET,3)PROSPERITY,4)PEACE,5)PARTNERSHIP.

Evolution
•In2012,theUnitedNationsConferenceonSustainableDevelopment
(UNCSD),alsoknownasRio+20,washeldasa20-yearfollowupto
UNCED.ColombiaproposedtheideaoftheSDGsatapreparationeventfor
Rio+20heldinIndonesiainJuly2011.InSeptember2011,thisideawas
pickedupbytheUnitedNationsDepartmentofPublicInformation64th
NGOConferenceinBonn,Germany.Theoutcomedocumentproposed17
sustainabledevelopmentgoalsandassociatedtargets.AttheRio+20
Conference,aresolutionknownas"TheFutureWeWant"wasreachedby
memberstates.Amongthekeythemesagreedonwerepovertyeradication,
energy,waterandsanitation,health,andhumansettlement.
•BanKi-moon,(Secretary-General,2007-2016),hasstatedinaNovember2016press
conferencethat:"Wedon’thaveplanBbecausethereisnoplanetB."This
thoughthasguidedthedevelopmentoftheSustainableDevelopmentGoals
(SDGs).

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
•Sustainabledevelopmentisdevelopmentthatmeetstheneedsofthe
presentwithoutcompromisingtheabilityoffuturegenerationstomeettheir
ownneeds.
•Itcontainswithinittwokeyconcepts:
i)Theconceptof'needs',inparticular,theessentialneedsoftheworld’s
poor,towhichoverridingpriorityshouldbegiven
ii)Theideaoflimitationsimposedbythestateoftechnologyandsocial
organizationontheenvironment'sabilitytomeetpresentandfuture
needs.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
❖SinceBrundtlandReport,theconceptofsustainabledevelopmenthas
developedbeyondtheinitialintergenerationframeworktofocusmoreonthe
goalofsociallyinclusiveandenvironmentallysustainableeconomicgrowth.
❖In1992,theUNConferenceonEnvironmentandDevelopmentpublished
theEarthCharter,whichoutlinesthebuildingofajust,sustainable,and
peacefulglobalsocietyinthe21stcentury.
❖TheactionplanAgenda21forsustainabledevelopmentidentified
information,integration,andparticipationaskeybuildingblockstohelp
countriesachievedevelopmentthatrecognizestheseinterdependentpillars.
