This presentation is describes drug delivery systems that use sustained release (SR) or controlled release (CR). SR systems provide medication over an extended time, often 8-12 hours, using first-order kinetics. CR systems maintain consistent drug levels by releasing the drug at a predefined rate based on zero-order kinetics. SR systems do not always localize drugs to the active site, whereas CR systems frequently do. SR and CR administration can reduce adverse effects and dosing frequency while increasing bioavailability and patient compliance when compared to traditional dosage forms. Factors such as dosage form materials, drug characteristics, and the environment all influence drug release from these systems.
