What are OER? "Teaching, learning, and research materials in the public domain or released under an open license“ OER are educational materials that are free to use, adapt, and share Example: textbooks, images, videos, lectures, software 2

Why OER? Reduce costs for students Increase accessibility and equity Improve quality and relevance Encourage collaboration and sharing Support flexible and personalized learning 3

What types of resources are available? Examples: Open textbooks Online courses and MOOCs Images and multimedia Software and simulations Lesson plans and activities 4

Understanding OER Licenses Creative Commons licenses allow for free use, sharing, and adaptation Examples: CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0 5

Where to find OER? Examples: Online repositories (e.g. OpenStax, Rice University's Connexions ) Search engines (e.g. Google, OER Commons) Institutional websites and libraries 6

How to create OER? Steps: - Identify a need or gap - Design and develop the resource - Choose an open license - Share and disseminate the resource 7

Examples of OER in Use Case studies: - Open textbooks in community colleges - MOOCs for professional development - OER-based curriculum in schools 8

Overcoming Barriers to OER Adoption Challenges: - Quality and validation - Discovery and access - Licensing and copyright - Cultural and systemic barriers Solutions: - Peer review and validation - Search engines and repositories - Clear licensing and guidelines - Institutional support and policy 9
