Power supply
introduction Power supply is an electronic device that provides power to electronic components and circuits. Most of the computer devices are digital devices and they need less power as compared to home or office use. This led to the implementation of SMPS. This is a technology which takes AC input and it gives DC output . It converts the power from high level to low level.
SMPs Switch Mode Power Supply. It is a power supply device of the computer. It takes one AC input and it gives multiple DC outputs. It is responsible to provide require DC to the different components of the computer. Microprocessor 3.3v Chipset 5v Disk drives 12v
smps It converts AC into DC. Different types of power supplies are there based on their capacity, features and functionalities. Now a days power supplies are available in the range of 250W to 400W. It takes 250v current from home or office use and it gives the DC current to the computer in the range of 3.3v, 5v, 12v.
Parts of the SMPS Protective cover Motherboard connectors Disk drive connectors Voltage selector switch Power cord socket Monitor cord socket Power supply fan Fan outlet
Based on motherboards AT power supply ATX power supply It has 12 – pin motherboard connector Used by older motherboards. Manually switch off the system. No of disk drive connectors are less. It has 20 + 4 pin motherboard connectors. Using by latest motherboards. System automatically turns off. No of disk drive connectors are more.
Other types of smps Small Form Extended (SFX). It has two fans two cool the system. It uses ATX connector to connect the motherboard Workstation Technology Extended (WTX). It is available in three ranges 460W, 610W and 800W with either single or double fan.
Redundant Power Supply. This type of power supply consists of two power supply units. Each unit is capable of supplying power to entire system. If one unit fails, other unit can prevent data loss or work loss. It is also known as Hot Swappable Power supply. It is meant for servers.
Different output voltages Voltage Range Function -12V Blue in color. Used by some of the serial ports. -5V White in color. Used by older floppy disk drives and ISA slots 0V Black in color. used to complete a circuit. Ground voltage. +3.3V Orange in color. MP, PCI/AGP, ATX are uses. +5V Red in color. Used by disk drives and RAM. Basic power . +12V Yellow in color. Used by monitors, cooling fans . Different components of the PC require different voltages.
Power connectors AT power connector. ATX power connector. Standard peripheral power connector. Floppy disk drive connectors. 2/3 pin Mini plug type connectors.
AT power connector It is a 12 – pins power connector of motherboard. It uses 4 values of voltages. + 12v,+ 5v, -12v, -5v. Less disk drive connectors.
ATX power connectors It is a 20 + 4 pin power connector of motherboard. It uses 6 values of voltages. It has more disk drive connectors. It is advanced.
Standard peripheral component connectors These are also known as Molex connectors. These are 4 wire connectors. Used to connect CD, DVD and HDD.
Floppy disk connectors It is used to connect 3.5 inch floppy disk drive. It is also called Mini plug or Berg connector.
Power switches These are available in either red or black color. Used to switch the power supply for the system on and off.
Power supply fan It is used to cool the entire system of SMPS. It is also used to check the status of the power supply. Power supply uses generally uses two types of fans.
Types of fans Sleeve bearing fans Ball bearing fans These fans uses sleeve bearing motors. Fans get jammed frequently. Not reliable and life time is less. Less expensive. These fans uses ball bearing motors. Fans will not get jammed . More reliable and long lasting. Expensive.
