Any woody plant material (tree, vine, shrub or herb) can be used Bonsai is an art of growing and training of a plant to a miniature form having a natural look of old age. It was originated from china, but it was called as the Japanese art. It involves techniques of extreme dwarfing. The optimum size of bonsai may be only 30 to 60 cm in height, but miniature sizes of below 25 cm have also been preferred. Bonsai of minimum 10 years old are period, but of 100 and even 200 years of age are available and are highly valued as ‘venerable’ specimens.to produce a tree-like shape by means of selective pruning. INTRODUCTION Art of growing miniature trees in containers or pots Word bonsai is derived from Chinese term pentsai which is pronounced as bonsai in Japanese. Literally bonsai means tray planting. In Japanese language ‘ Bon’ means tray and ‘Sai’ means planting.
HISTORY Originated in china around 2200-2000 BC. Zen Buddhist monks introduced It to japan during kamakura period (1185-1339 AD) The art got perfection in japan and spread to other parts of world. Came to be known in USA around 1870. Spread to Europe and other parts of Asia after second world war Bonsai is believed to have first appeared in Nepal through a Nepali army officer colonel Chet Bahadur Bista
DEFINITION The word “Bon- Sai ” is a Japanese term which literally means” plantation in a container ” CATEGORY Large bonsai - > 60cm Medium bonsai – 30-60cm Small bonsai – 20-30cm Mame bonsai - <20cm
PURPOSE Contemplation for the viewer Pleasant exercise of effort Not intended for production of food or for medicine Focuses on long term cultivation and shaping of one more small trees growing in a container.

MAKING BONSAI Take a container wash it and fill it with media, add media 1 cm below the brim. Cut the polythene bag and gently take out the plant. Retain only 1/3 rd of the tap root and give a V cut. Make a hole in the pre – filled container and place the plant. Place the plant as per the style. Slowly pour water and do so until water drains away from the drainage to its original shape. Place the plant in a shady location for 2-3 weeks. Some plant may drop the vegetation buds signals shift to lighted area .
