taper method by tail stock offsetting and taper attachment

Slide Content

PRACTICAL MANNUAL
OBJECT: To form taper by using tailstock offsetting method and taper
attachment method.
PROCEDURE:
OFFSETTING THE TAILSTOCK:
For tapers on longer shafts, you can offset the tailstock from the Centre line.
Calculations on the offset will be needed

 As the amount that of the tailstock may be limited so it is used to cut taper
on small angles when to taper attachment is available.
 Offset the tailstock to the obtained value from the above mentioned
formula
 Touch the tip of dial indicator to one end of tailstock and displace from
another end by applying force to the desired distance.
 The clamp the job between the chuck and revolving center.
 Simply turn the job you will get the required taper.

 The tailstock must be reset after taper turning; the offset will not be
obvious to another user.

BY TAPER ATTACHMENT METHOD:
For longer tapers you can use a Taper Turning Attachment for both either
external or internal tapers.
. • They attach to the lathe bed.
• Having set the angle on the attachment, the cross slide is moved producing the
taper as the saddle moves along the bed.

 In taper turning attachment bed clamp is to attach it with bed of the lathe
machine.
 Spline screw is attached to the cross slide to move the cross slide according
to the desired angle.
 Lock nut is used to lock the taper bar while the taper angle is adjusted by
the taper adjusting screw.
 Taper slide has readings to make adjustments.
 First loose the lock nut of both sides and set the desired angle by adjusting
screw.
 Clamp the job between chuck and tailstock.
 Start turning your job, you will see cross slide is moving with the angle you
have set to the taper attachment , thus you get the desired taper.
