TARGIONIA
External features
 Targionia is a genus of liverworts in the
order marchantiales.
 Scales may be simple or appendaged.
 Rhizoids are present.
 Air pores are present on the dorsal
surface.
 Rhizoids are smooth walled and
Tuberculate
 Branching is dichotomous and
dorsiventral.
 Adventitious shoots are produced from
ventral surface of the midrib.


Internal features
 Thallus shows two distinct regions -
Photosynthetic zone and storage zone
 The upper photosynthetic zone consist of
a single row of air chambers which are
packed with branched and unbranched
photosynthetic filaments
 The lower storage zone is similar to that
of Riccia.
 This zone represents the ventral tissue of
the thallus and lies below the
photosynthetic zone.
 It consist of compactly arranged colorless
parenchyma cells without inter cellular
spaces
 Cells contains abundant starch grains and
oil bodies
