External features
Targionia is a genus of liverworts in the
order marchantiales.
Scales may be simple or appendaged.
Rhizoids are present.
Air pores are present on the dorsal
surface.
Rhizoids are smooth walled and
Tuberculate
Branching is dichotomous and
dorsiventral.
Adventitious shoots are produced from
ventral surface of the midrib.
Internal features
Thallus shows two distinct regions -
Photosynthetic zone and storage zone
The upper photosynthetic zone consist of
a single row of air chambers which are
packed with branched and unbranched
photosynthetic filaments
The lower storage zone is similar to that
of Riccia.
This zone represents the ventral tissue of
the thallus and lies below the
photosynthetic zone.
It consist of compactly arranged colorless
parenchyma cells without inter cellular
spaces
Cells contains abundant starch grains and
oil bodies
