CONCEPT OF TEACHING Teaching is a face-to-face, formal, direct situation in which the ideas and instructions pass from one biologically responsive organism to another in a social matrix. Teaching is learning-oriented as learning is modification of behavior.
TEACHING IN INDIA In India, the National Policy on Education, 1986 and the Programme of Action 1986 have emphasized the need for a complete restructuring of teaching education. The scheme of Restructuring and Re-organization of Teacher was introduced in 1987, aimed at teacher’s orientation, training and upgradation of knowledge, pedagogical skills, and competence. Under this scheme, following were decided: Setting of District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) Upgrading the existing teacher training colleges education and development of institutes of Advanced Studies in Education.
DEFINITIONS OF TEACHING MORRISON: “Teaching is a disciplined social process in which teacher influences the behavior of the less experienced pupil and helps him develop according to the needs and ideas of the society. Thus, teaching is reduced to what the teacher teaches”. MORRISON: “Teaching is an intimate contact between a more mature personality and a less mature one which is designed to further the education of the latter”. N L GAGE: “Teaching is a form of interpersonal influence aimed at changing the behavior potential of another person”.
DEFINITIONS OF TEACHING EDMUND AMIDON: “Teaching is an interactive process, primarily involving classroom talk which takes place between the teacher and pupils and occurs during definable activities”. JOHN BRUBACHER: “Teaching is an arrangement and manipulation of a situation in which there are gaps and obstructions which an individual will seek to overcome and from which he will learn in the course of doing so”.
NATURE OF TEACHING Teaching is the specialized application of knowledge, skills and attributes designed to provide unique services to meet the educational needs of the individual and of society. The choice of learning activities whereby the goals of education are realized in the educational institution is the responsibility of the teaching profession. A teacher is said to be a failure if he is unable to transmit knowledge to the pupils even if he has abilities, merit and mastery of subject.
NATURE OF TEACHING The teacher needs two things: The complete knowledge of the subject matter The scientific knowledge of the teaching styles for disseminating the knowledge to the pupils
