Characteristics of ADULT LEARNER Cognitive Characteristics Adult learners often take responsibilities for their own success (or) failure at learning They are self motivated They are autonomous and self directed ( independent person ) They want to apply new knowledge and skill immediately.

ii. Academic characteristics Adults require the big picture view of what they are learning . They are result oriented they have specific expectations for what they will get out learning activities and will often drop out of voluntary learning , if their expectations are not met. Many adults prefer to learn by doing rather than listening to lectures.

iii. Social characteristics Many self directed adult learners prefer a learning community with whom they can interact and discuss questions and issues. Most adult leaders have numerous responsibilities and commitments to family, friends, community , and work carving outcome for learning which affects adult learners. They want to be treated with respect.

iv. Emotional characteristics Sense of control and self directed and often face anxiety. Feel anger about forced changes in job policies (or) responsibilities these emotion can interference with learning process. Like to gain competence in workplace skills as it boasts confidence and improve self esteem.
