Teaching New Literacy in a Digital Environment

What is Digital Teaching-and- Learnin g The advent of ICT appears to have created a big problem in our schools today. The problem is the rapidly growing gap between young people in the classroom and the adult teachers who teach them.

Disc o v ering the digital world Teachers have to realize that ICT has started to create a 21 st century digital world, and they are obliged to teach the new generation of learners to be successful in this kind of world.

1. Open various search engines and use them for looking at information you wish to know. 2. Open social network sites 3. Open blog sites for writings of so many interests. 4. Look for music and download free music 5. Look for current news and historical events 6. Try online commerce and see the wide range of products available for purchase. 7. Play video games 8. Look for education sites.

DIGITAL LITERACIES - Refer to reading and writing, using electronic extensions-reading through monitor screen and Internet surfing and writing t hr ough texting, keyboarding, emailing, blogging, editing, photo-video postings (Anderson, 2010)

More specifically forming part of digital literacies are: 1. Use of skills to create and share information 2. Searching, sifting, scanning and sorting information 3. Navigating screens of information

4. Locating and evaluating information 5. Using ICT for research and problem-solving 6. Making power point and other multimedia presentations

7. Retrieving, organizing, managing, and creating information 8. Sending and receiving messages

Literacy to fluency Information Fluency This is ability to access digital information with the use of searching and surfing skills. This is about whole-brain creative and problem solving thinking Solution Fluency Collaboration Fluency Media Proficiency This is proficiency in working as a team with virtual or real partners using social networking sites and online gaming domains This is the ability for analytic interpretation of the message of communication media; also the ability to create and publish original digital products, such as a personal blog or journal. Creativity Fluency This is artistic proficiency through design, art, and storytelling

INTEGRATING ICT THROUGH STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING According to the 21 st century fluency, learning setting optimized learning by way of: Simulating the real experience , giving a talk , participating in a discussion seeing it done on a location, watching a demonstration, looking at an exhibit, watching a movie, viewing pictures, hearing words and reading .

INTERNET LEARNING ACTIVITIES 1 . Inquiry-oriented cooperative learning. 2 . Web Quests 3 . Thema t ic Web Collections 4. Open-minded , student-direct research projects 5. Publishing original ideas and thoughts 6. Field trips 7. Project base learning

Group activity : *Each group will give at least 5 ICT technologies which capture, interpret, store or transmit information. *Choose one of the ICT’s you think is commonly use, easy to use, and relevant to teaching and learning.
