TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF COAL IN INDIA SOUMYARANJAN SAHOO
TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION Gondwana coal Tertiary coal(15-60my) Most of coals are from karaharbari, Barakar ,& Raniganj formations.
CHARECTERISTICS OF GONDWANA COAL In I ndia about 98% of coal produced from G ondwana coal fields & coal seams are associated with sandstones. Most of the G ondwana coals are of bituminous type. Mostly black in colour &carbon is more than 70 %. In I ndia 80 out of 113 coal fields are of G ondwana coal. Almost free from moisture and contains small amount of sulphur . Volatile and ash content is about 13-30%. Most of them are noncoking (except jharia, bokaro, giridh ).
CHARECTERISTICS OF TERTIARY COAL In I ndia about only 2% of coal are produced from tertiary coal fields & these are of lignite type. Very low carbon(30-50%) & brown in colour . High sulphur contain & very less amount of gold . Coal seams of NE are highly folded hence difficult to mine. Coal seams are associated with limestone & slates. 90% of the tertiary coal are in Ney valley.
SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF COAL Distribution of G ondwana coal. Gondwana coals in India are found in river valleys. 1.Damodar valley(West bengle and Bihar) 2.Son-Mahanadi valley(M.P &Odisha) 3.Wardha-Godavari valley(A.P & Maharastra )
