Types of classification Ulrich was the first to classify temporal bone fractures into longitudinal and transverse fractures in 1926 Other classification is otic capsule violating or sparing - a better predictor of whether severe facial nerve injury or CSF leak will occur.
A patient with an initial incomplete palsy must have had a substantial proportion of nerve fibres that were initially uninjured. Subsequent deterioration is likely to be caused by conversion to neuropraxia secondary to oedema . These patients are likely to return to normal function without the need for surgical treatment. It should also be noted that a patient with a complete palsy will often be able to close his or her eyelid initially because there will still be resting tone within the facial muscles and the lid closes by relaxation of levator palpebrae superioris , which is innervated by the oculomotor nerve.
