The 5 Food Groups Food Choice and Health

Introduction The key to eating well is to enjoy a variety of foods from each of the Five Food Groups. Foods are grouped together because they provide similar amounts of the key nutrients of that food group.  For Example the milk, yogurt, cheese food group include calcium and protein , while the fruit group is a good source of vitamins, especially vitamin C.

1. Vegetables and beans. Examples

The vegetables and beans group? Vegetables come from many different parts of the plant, including the leaves, roots, tubers, flowers, stems, seeds and shoots.  Legumes are the seeds of the plant and are eaten in their as green peas and beans, and the mature form as dried peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas. Dark green Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbages, cauliflower. Lettuce, spinach, snow peas Root vegetables Potato, sweet potato, carrots, beetroot, onions, garlic, bamboo shoots, turnip. Legumes/beans Red kidney beans, soybeans, lima beans,chickpeas , lentils, split peas. Other vegetables Tomato, celery, sprouts, squash, avocado, mushrooms, cucumber, pumpkin, green peas, green beans

  Take a look at this photo. This is the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables most people should eat daily. Adults should eat anywhere from 5 to  13 servings  of fruits and vegetables per day.

3. Grain foods Any food made from: wheat,  rice, oats,  cornmeal,  barley or another cereal grain is a grain product.  Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas are examples of grain products.

4 . Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds and beans. This group of foods is rich in protein and is also a good source of other nutrients, such as iron, zinc,and vitamins Fish, especially oily fish, can be a good source of omega-3 fatty acids which is very good for your heart.

5. Milk, yoghurt cheese. Milk and foods made from milk are the best sources of the mineral  calcium . They also provide us with vitamin A . The foods in this group are important because all of the nutrients work together to keep our bones strong and healthy.

Exercise Create a meal using the Healthy eating Plate and the 5 food groups As your guide. Type the meal up using Microsoft Word, include pictures.
