Twoofthesixareasofgeniuswouldbeconsideredourworking
competencies.Thesearetheactivitiesthatwefindneithercompletely
miserablenorcompletelyjoyful,andwhichwecandofairlywell,
perhapsevenverywell.Mostofuscanmanagetooperateinour
workingcompetenciesfairlywellforawhile,butwewilleventually
growwearyifwearenotallowedtoexerciseourtruegeniuses.

5. Category 3: Working Frustration
Finally,eachofushastwotypesofworkthatdrainusofourjoyand
energy,andwecalltheseourworkingfrustrations.Weusuallystruggle
intheseactivities.Ofcourse,noonecancompletelyavoidworkingin
ourareasoffrustrationfromtimetotime,butifwefindourselves
spendingmeaningfultimeengagedintheseactivities,weareboundto
experiencemiseryatwork,andultimately,struggleorevenfail.

6. Genius vs. Competency vs. Frustration
Eventhougheachtypeiscalledagenius,noonepersoncanclaimall
sixastheirindividualgeniuses.Weallhaveareaswherewethrive,
areaswherewestruggle,andareasthatfallsomewhereinbetween.
Let’stakealookateachofthosethreecategories,becausesuccess
requiresustounderstandtheareaswhereweshineaswellasthose
wherewedon’t.

untappedpotentialthatshouldbetapped.

9. Invention
Theabilitytocomeupwithnewideasandsolutions.Peoplewiththisgenius
aredrawntowardorigination,creativity,andingenuityinthetruestsenseof
thosewords,evenwithlittledirectionandcontext.Thougheverytypeisa
genius,thesearethepeoplewhoaremostoftenreferredtoas“geniuses”
becausemanyoftheirideasseemtocomeoutofthinair.

10. Discernment
Thisgeniusisrelatedtoinstinct,intuition,anduncannyjudgment.People
withthisgeniushaveanaturalabilitytoassessanideaorsituation,even
withoutalotofdataorexpertise.Usingpatternrecognitionandgutfeel,
theyareabletoprovidevaluableadviceandfeedbackaroundmostsubjects
inawaythattranscendstheirlevelsofspecificknowledgeorinformation.
Thegeniusofdiscernmentisthegiftthatcompelssomeonetotapthe
brakesandevaluate.

11. Galvanizing
Thisgeniusisaboutrallying,motivating,andprovokingpeopletotake
actionaroundanideaoraninitiative.Peoplewiththisgeniusare
naturallyinclinedtoinspireandenlistotherstogetinvolvedinan
endeavor.Theydon’tmindpersuadingpeopletorethinkorchange
theirplansinordertoembarkonsomethingworthwhile.

12. Enablement
Thisgeniusofenablementinvolvesprovidingpeoplewithsupportand
assistanceinthewaythatitisneeded.Peoplewiththisgeniusareadeptat
respondingtotheneedsofotherswithoutconditionsorrestrictions.They
arenaturallyinclinedtohelpothersaccomplishtheirgoalsandoftencan
anticipatewhatpeoplemightneedbeforetheyevenask.Individualswiththe
GeniusofEnablementarefrequentlyunawarethatthisisageniusatall.

13. Tenacity
Thisgeniusisaboutthesatisfactionofpushingthingsacrossthefinishlineto
completion.Peoplewiththisgeniusarenotonlycapableof,butnaturally
inclinedto,finishprojectsandensurethattheyarecompletedaccordingto
specification.Theygainenergybypushingthroughobstaclesandseeingthe
impactoftheirwork,andtheyfindjoyincrossingtasksofftheirlistand
gettingclosure.
