Letβs Review! Plot the following points using a number line. 1. A = β10 3. C = 7 5. E = β6 2. B = 9 4. D = β5
ABSOLUTE VALUE of an Integer
Learning Competency By the end of this lesson, the learners are able to identify the absolute value of an integer, and its meaning on the number line. Objective/s: 1. Plot integers on a number line. 2. Determine the absolute value of integers. 3. Compare the absolute values of integers. 4. Solve real-life problems involving absolute value.
SOCIAL DISTANCING Social distancing as part of health protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic. This health safety measure was imposed to ensure the public health safety.
A bsolute V alue The absolute value of an integer refers to its actual distance from zero in a number line. It is denoted by the symbol | π₯ |, where π₯ is any positive or negative integer, or zero.
Remember! Distance is measured with positive numbers, regardless of where the measurement begins and finishes. We use the concept of a number's absolute value to calculate distance.
Example 1. What is the value of |β4| and |4|? Solution: The integer β4 is 4 units away from zero while the integer 4 is also 4 units away from zero.
Example 2. Which has a greater value, |β7| or |6|? Solution: β7 is seven units away from zero and 6 is six units away from zero. That is, |β7| = 7 |6| = 6 So, |β7|has a greater value than |6|.
Example 3. c. Two cars, A and B, left the car park at the same time and traveled at different speeds in opposite directions. After one hour, Car A was 20 kilometers to the west of the car park, and Car B was 24 kilometers to the east of the car park. Represent the given information in absolute values and find the distance between car A and car B. Let 20 km to the west = -20 Let 24 km to the east = 24
Letβs Practice Plot the following points using a number line. F is five units to the left of zero. G is seven units eastward of zero. H is 10 units to the right of G. I is 6 units to the left of H. J is in the middle of β10 and 7.
Letβs Practice B. Compare the values of each item by writing the symbols <, >, and = in the space provided. 1. |β13| _____ |11| 2. |β28| _____ |β29| 3. |β98| _____ |β50| 4. |β20| _____ |20| 5. |β100| _____ |110|
Letβs Practice Solve this problem 1. Gina lives between Caloy and Danah. She lives closer to Caloy by 2 blocks. If Danah is 5 blocks away from Gina, how far is Caloy from Danah?
Letβs Practice Solve this problem 2. Mrs. Reyes went 6 blocks to the church, north of her house. She then went to the market 3 blocks from the church in the same direction. Her friend, Mrs. Agustine , was at the park, 3 blocks to the south of her house. How far is Mrs. Reyes from Mrs. Agustine ?
1. How will you determine the absolute value of integers? 2. Explain the importance of absolute value in calculating distances or differences.
Quiz Determine the Absolute value of the following integers. 1. |-9| 2. |95| 3. |-123| 4. |-13| 5. |8| Compare the values of each item by writing the symbols <, >, and = in the space provided. 1. A submarine is 35 meters below sea level. At the same instant, an airplane is flying 200 meters above. How far is the submarine from the airplane? Write your complete solution.
Homework W rite an essay based on their understanding of the concept of absolute values of integers and how they can apply it in their daily lives.
