Who is the Goddess Aphrodite? She was the Goddess of love, passion and beauty in the ancient world. She was married to god Hephaestos but she had an affair with Ares (Mars) the handsome god of war and they had three children. She was the mother of Eros (Cupid), the winged god of love

In the Homeric 'Iliad‘, Aphrodite is called the Cyprian or Cytherea . The Romans called her Venus. Greek sculptors made many figures of her. The most famous statue of Aphrodite today, is the beautiful 'Venus de Milo', now in the Louvre in Paris.

The famous armless statue called “ Venus de Milo”.

The birth of Aphrodite According to the Greek mythology, Cyprus is the birth place of the goddess Aphrodite. Gaia (Mother Earth) asked one of her sons, Cronus, to mutilate his father, Uranus (Sky). Cronus cut off Uranus' testicles and threw them into the sea. A white foam appeared from which a maiden arose, the waves first took her to Kythera and then brought her to Cyprus.

Mythology says that Aphrodite came out of the sea standing naked and covered with water on a seashell close to the costal cliffs of Paphos , Cyprus . Her name literally means "foam born”. Aphros in Greek means "foam."
