DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES IN ELT CLASSROOMS IDigital technologies have a crucial role to play in the teaching of foreign languages. OECD report on digital technologies (2024)
QUESTION: Do you use technology in your English classrooms? Why do you use it?
BENEFITS OF USING DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES Digital tools enhance student engagement, personalize learning, and improve accessibility. They transform traditional lessons into interactive sessions, capturing attention and promoting active participation. Educators can tailor lessons to individual needs, fostering an inclusive environment. Additionally, digital technologies provide access to authentic materials, helping students understand English in diverse contexts. They also facilitate global collaboration, enriching cultural awareness and communication skills.
WHICH STATEMENTS DO YOU AGREE AND GIVE EXAMPLE BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES: the internet offers access to a huge range of English language materials for use in the classroom online materials help create connections between the classroom and the real world digital resources add variety to lessons and can boost motivation digital tools can offer learners extra support to access and understand texts, audios and videos in English (e.g. subtitles, transcript, etc.) teachers can use digital tools, including AI tools, to create teaching materials quickly and effectively learners can use digital tools to create their own digital content digital platforms offer spaces for learners to communicate and collaborate beyond the classroom digital resources offer teachers a range of tools for assessment and feedback.
EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES Setting digital homework I often ask my learners to look at digital resources for homework. For example, I ask them to watch a short video clip and prepare to talk about it in the next lesson. Using subtitles and variable speeds My learners can choose to use subtitles in English or in their own language to help them understand if they want. And I encourage them to experiment with listening at different speeds. Supporting learners with different needs Using these tools means that all the learners can work at their own pace and set their own level of difficulty. That way I can support the learners who find listening difficult, and also challenge the more confident learners.
