Facts about Ilocos Region By: Zinnia Mitz Camince

LOCATION Ilocos is a region in the Philippines,encompasing the northwestern coast of Luzon island. It's known for its historic sites, beaches and the well-preserved Spanish colonial city of Vigan. Dating 16th century, Vigan's mestezo district is characterized by cobblestone streets and mansions with wrought-iron balconies. Further North Laoag city is a jumping-off point of the huge La Paz Sand Dunes.

LAND 13,012.60km² (5,024.19 sq mi)

GEOGRAPHY The Ilocos region occupies the narrow plain mountain between the Cordillera Central mountain range and the South China Sea, and the Norhern portion of the Central Luzon plain, to the North-East of the Zambales Mountains

HISTORY The region was first inhabited by the aboriginal Negretos,before they were pushed by successive waves Austronesian migrants that penetrated the narrow coast. Tingguians in the interior, Ilocos in the North and Pangasinans in the South settled the region. Before the administration of Ferdenand Marcos, Pangasinan was not a part of the region.

ILOCOS NORTE

Ilocos Norte Ilocos Norte- is a province of the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region. Its capital is Laoag City and is located at the northwest corner of Luzon Island, bordering Cagayan and Apayao to the east, and Abra to the southeast, and Ilocos Sur to the southwest. Ilocos Norte faces the West Philippine Sea to the west and the Luzon Strait to the north.

Wind power- Ilocos Norte’s possition on the norhwest corner of Luzon makes it deal for wind power generation. There is currently a 25 megawatt wind farm in Ilocos Norte, and several more wind energy projects are being planned. Tourism Pottery

ILOCOS SUR

Ilocos Sur Ilocos Sur is a province in the Philippine located in the Ilocos Region in Luzon. Vigan City, located on the mounth of Meztizo River is the provincial capital. Ilocos Sur is bordered by Ilocos Norte and Abra to north,Mountain Province to the east, La Union and Benguet to the south and the South China Sea to the west.

Product and Industries Ilocos Sur’s Economy is agrarian, but its 2,647sq km 2 (1,022 sq mi) of Unfertile land is not enough to support a population of 338,579. Primary crops:Rice,corn,tobacco and fruit trees Secondary crops:camote, cassava, sugar cane, and onions

LA UNION

La Union La Union is a province in the Philippines located in Ilocos Region in the island of Luzon. Its capital city of San Fernando, which also serves as the regional center of the whole Ilocos Region.

Founded:March 2, 1850 Capital: San Fernando Area:1,497.70km 2 (578.27sq mi) The province is bordered by Ilocos Sur to the north, Benguet to the east, Pangasinan to the south and to the west by the shores of the South China Sea.

PANGASINAN

Pangasinan Pangasinan is a province in the Philippines. Its provincial capital is Lingayen. Pangasinan is located on the western area of the island of Luzon along the Lingayen Gulf and South China Sea.

Founded: April 5,1580 Capital: Lingayen Area:5,451.01km 2 (2,104.65sq mi) Highest Elevation: Mt. Malico-1,675m(5,495 ft) Population:2,956,726(2015)

Product and Industries The province is a major pruducer of salt in the Philippines. The major products are "bagoong" (salted-krill) and "alamang" (shirmp-paste).

Pangasinan is the riches province in Ilocos Region of the Philippines.

Energy The 1200 megawatt Sual Coal-Fired Power Plant, and 345 megawatt San Roque Multi-Purpose Dam, located in the municipalities of Sual and San Manuel respectively, are the primary sources of energy of the province.

Marine Pangasinan is a major fish supplier in Luzon, and a major producer of salt in the Philippines. It has extensive fishponds, mostly for raising bangus or "milkfish", along the coasts of the Lingayen Gulf and the South China Sea. Pangasinan's aquaculture includes oyster and sea urchin farms.

Agriculture The major crops in Pangasinan are rice, mangoes, corn, and sugar cane. Pangasinan has a land area of 536,819 hectares, and 44 percent of the total land area of Pangasinan is devoted to agricultural production.

TOURIST SPOTS

Saud beach(Pagudpud Beaches ) One of the finest beaches in the Philippines,Saud beach is actually what people usually refer to when they talk about Pagudpud beach.

Blue Lagoon This beach is use to be a secret, however,as many tourist found the place to be relaxing and cozy have to come to see the place themselves. Blue lagoon AKA Maira-Ira point is a crescent-shaped beach with soft white sand lining its pristine blue waters.

Baluarte There are two good reasons why you should visit Baluarte , also known as the Fortress: first, because of its mini-zoo that serves as the home of many endemic animals in the Philippines and second, is that it is actually owned by Mr. Chavit Singson , a well-known politician in the country .

Calle Crisologo, Vigan The most famous and major touris magnet in Vigan,Calle Crisologo is a full Spanish-styled houses that gives people of this generation a glimplse of the Spanish era .

Cape Bojeador Lightouse Dubbed as the tallest lighthouse in the Philippines, Cape Bojeador sets conveniently atop of a hill. The lighthouse is just so tall that it gives the best panoramic view of the South China Sea.

Bangui Windmills These windmills have become one of the major attractions of Ilocos and have since become a symbol for Ilocos Norte. It was constructed primarily to provide electricity throughout the province. It is conveniently located at a 9 kilometer stretch farm that faces the South China Sea, the right spot for strong winds .

Malacanang of the North Once the official residence of Former President Ferdinand Marcos in Ilocos Norte, this palace is now a museum showcasing. memorabilia owned by its previous occupants. It also presents a great view of the Paoay Lake

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation Found in the rocky parts of Burgos, Ilocos Norte, these rock formations cannot be classified as something common as they are formed over years and years to a formation that you’d unexpectedly see. For some reasons, seeing Kapurpurawan Rocks makes you realize that when nature works, it’s definitely something that no human can ever accomplish .

Bell Tower Bantay,Ilocos Sur Sitting on top of a hill, the historical Bantay Belfry is not only a must-see sight in Ilocos because of its historic and cultural significance but also because of the panoramic view of the entire Ilocos Sur when one goes to its top part.

St . Agustine Church In Paoay The Paoay Church’s history is dated back in 1694 when its construction was started by the Augustinian friars. If you’ll look at it, the church’s design is a combination of Oriental, Baroque and Gothic styles. The Paoay Church has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Paoay Sand Dunes Our very own Paoay Ilocos Norte boasts its sand dune adventure and sport for its tourists who wish to try how it feels like playing in the sand. Sand dunes in Paoay is uniquely Ilocos . 

The Hundreds Island   Hundred Islands National Park ( Pangasinan :   Kapulo-puloan or   Taytay -Bakes ) is a national park  in the  Philippines . The protected area is located in the city of  Alaminos , in the province of  Pangasinan  in northern Philippines. The islands, totaling 124 at low tide and 123 at high tide, are scattered in  Lingayen Gulf covering an area of 16.76 square kilometres (6.47  sq  mi).
