The Federal work-study Program Cebelis CRespo

What is it? The Federal Work-Study Program allows our financial aid eligible students with unmet financial aid need to work part time on campus to earn money. This money is paid out directly to the student biweekly by check or direct deposit. It is not used to automatically pay any balance owed to the college. The purpose of the program (in addition to supporting our students financially) is for students to gain real life experience in the work force.

How does a department request a work study position for their office? FWS coordinator sends an email to the departments to ask who would like to participate in the program. Offices must reply to that email and indicate the number of hours per week they are looking for as well as the job description.

QCC’s FWS Allocation QCC is given a FWS allocation each year, funding is not unlimited. The allocation can change each year. The 2021-2022 allocation was about $270,000. Depending on FWS allocation, offices may not get the number of employees or hours they request. Some years there is a student waitlist, but since the COVID-19 pandemic there has not been a waitlist, as the program had to be revamped when we returned to campus.

How To Keep Our Allocation To remain eligible for these funds we must use 7% of our allocation to pay students employed in community service jobs. We must also have one or more students employed in a: Reading tutoring project that employs one or more FWS students as reading tutors for children who are preschool age or are in elementary school; or Family literacy project that employs one or more FWS students in family literacy activities. THIS REQUIREMENT WAS PREVIOUSLY WAIVED FROM MARCH OF 2019 THROUGH AUGUST OF 2023.

How do students qualify? File a FAFSA each academic year Answer question 31

If a student shows interest in our program, no matter how they answered question 31 on the FASFA, we give them this form to complete and submit back to us.

What’s next? I let students know that they are eligible through Q-mail I send attachments of the job descriptions of all open positions Students are responsible for reaching out to supervisors for interviews If the supervisor would like to hire the student after the interview, they let me know I schedule an on boarding meeting with the student

Federal work study program student employment obligations Students must not begin working until all necessary employment paperwork is completed with the Financial Aid Office.  Are expected to remain working at that job for the entire semester. Once your work schedule has been established with your supervisor, you must report to work when expected. If you are ill, you must contact your supervisor BEFORE your scheduled work time.  Students are expected to accurately record the hours worked on their weekly time card/paper timesheet and obtain the necessary approvals or signatures. Students must take an unpaid half-hour break for every six (6) hours worked per day.  Students cannot work during time that they are scheduled to be in class. The only exception is if the class did not meet as scheduled or did not run the full length. In this case, the student must have a comment on their timecard or timesheet to explain the conflict of hours with their class schedule.

Summer FWS Requirements A student who is interested in working a FWS student over the summer: Must be enrolled in summer courses and have unmet financial need OR Have a FAFSA for the upcoming fall semester, be enrolled in the upcoming fall and have unmet need.
