The Five Classics

The Book of Odes (Shijing)
-also know as book of songs.
•The oldest existing collection
of ancient Chinese poetry
•Contain Folksong and Hyms
used for sacrifice .
•Included issues of common
man ,also like farming, love,
marriage, war ,etc.
•Compiled by Confucuis

I Beg of You, Chung Tzu (Ode 8)
I beg of you, Chung Tzu,
Do not climb into our homestead,
Do not break the willows we have
planted.
Not that I mind about the willows,
But I am afraid of my father and
mother. Chung Tzu I dearly love;
But of what my father and mother say
Indeed I am afraid.

I Beg of You, Chung Tzu (Ode 8)
I beg of you, Chung Tzu,
Do not climb over our wall,
Do not break the mulberry.trees we
have planted.
Not that I mind about the mulberry.trees,
But I am afraid of my brothers.

I Beg of You, Chung Tzu (Ode 8)
Chung Tzu I dearly love;
But of what my brothers say
Indeed I am afraid.
I beg of you, Chung Tzu,
Do not climb into our garden,
Do not break the hard.wood we have planted.
Not that I mind about the hard.wood,
But I am afraid of what people will say.

The path of the Great Learning is at enlightening one’s bright
virtues, at influencing the people, and ending at the greatest
excellence.

Analects (Lunyu)
is a collection of
Kongzi's teachings
and discussions with
disciples.

•Emphasis on the importance of good governance
•Filial piety
•Importantance of Rituals
•Emphasis on learning "the way" achieved through
devotion to learning

Analects
Confucius said: “Governing by the power of virtue can
be compared to the Pole Star, which remains fixed in
place while all the other stars orbit respectfully around
it.”

The Master said: “In youth, respect your
parents when home and your elders when
away. Think carefully before you speak,
and stand by your words. Love the whole
expanse of things, and make an intimate of
Humanity. Then, if you have any energy
left, begin cultivating yourself.”

Mencius (Mengzi)
a book that elaborates on
the teachings of
Confucius through the
perspective of his
follower, Mencius.

Mencius
•Emphasis on the responsibility of the Emperor
to practice good governance
•All humans are inherently good
•Concerned with the topic of moral and
political philosophy

Mencius: Those who follow their greater self
become great people whereas those who
follow their lesser self become lesser
people.

The Doctrine of the
Mean (Zhongyong)
a work emphasizing the
importance of moderation
and balance in life.

Doctrine of Mean
•Emphasis on maintaining perfect balance and
harmony in life
•One should not act in excess
•Good governance rests with men and a ruler
encourage "the way" in others.
•Moderations, objectivity, sincerity , and propriety
•Three guidelines: self watchfulness, Leniency ,
and sincerity .

Doctrine of Mean teaches us
Too much is as bad as too little .
