Indian States And their Dresses

Assam Assamese women take pride in their graceful attire of mekhela sador, made from lustrous silk variants paat or muga and eri. Assamese men wear pair of dhoti and kurta along with a traditional handwoven scarf called the gamusa.

Punjab Punjab - the most colourful state in India. The women here wear colourful ghagras which are now mostly replaced by traditional salwar suits. Patiala salwar and churidars are very common in Punjab. The Punjabi men normally wear kurta and muktsari pajamas which are replaced by traditional tehmats. Punjabi men also wear headgear, known as Pagri.

Kerala Keralian women wear the traditional off white sari with golden border called the Mundum neriyathum. The Mundum neriyathum has one lower part called mundu that is worn waist downwards and the upper part is known as neriyathu which is either tucked into the blouse or worn over the left shoulder. The mundu is also worn by male folks in Kerala. Women of Kerala also wear embellished Ba narasi or Kanchipuram silk sarees.

Gujarat Gujarat is another Indian State that embraces colours in its culture, as also in its traditional attires. Womenfolks of Gujarat wear three-piece attire with a ghagra, choli and a head veil called Chaniya Choli. Gujarati men wear dhotis or churidar pajamas traditionally known as Chorno and Kediyu.

Maharashtra Maharashtra's culture is iconic and known all across the country. Women wear saree as traditional attire in Maharashtra, the fact that saree happens to be nine-yard wonder makes it all the more classic. Known as Nauwari Saadi or Lugda, the sarees are worn up to knee-length with choli which are remarkable for their characteristic style. Maharashtrian men wear dhotis known as Dhotar, paired with a tight fit short-sleeved shirt called Pheta.

Manipur Women of this state wear a sarong wrapped around the chest as a skirt that is called the Phanek. A horizontally and woven shawl or dupatta called the Innaphi goes around the upper body to complete the traditional female attire . The men wear dhoti and jacket as traditional attire.

Rajasthan Men in Rajasthan wear dhotis or churidar pyjama, kurta, angarkha, patka or Kamar band and a safa which is a kind of turban. Rajasthani women wear long skirts known as ghagras with blouses called kanchli and women covers their head with odhnis.

Sikkim Sikkim’s traditional attire is fashionable and visually similar to both males and females. The men wear a dress called Bakhu or Kho with a pair of loosely fitted trousers teamed up with a leather belt and embroidered leather boots. While the women wear the outfit over a full-sleeved silk blouse known as honju and fastened with a silk or cotton.
