The theme of the story:
●In this narrative Tishani talks about her journey to Antarctica
which is described as the coldest, driest and windiest continent
in the world and how the impact of human activities can be
studied by visiting it.
“If you want to know more about the planet’s past, present and
future, the Antarctica is the place to go. Bon Voyage!”
Part of History
●About 650 million years ago, we
discovered the existence of the southern
supercontinent Gondwana in Antarctica.
●When there were no humans the
temperature back then was significantly
warmer and supported a great variety of
vegetation and fauna.
● The supercontinent of Gondwana existed
500 million years.
●After the extinction of dinosaurs it caused
the landmass to split up into several
nations, becoming the world we know.
Parts of History continued
●We can imagine the following as a result of
continents drifting:
1.India drifting toward the north and joining with
Asia to form Himalayas.
2.When South America drifted off to North
America, the Drake Passage was created, which
led to the formation of a chilly circumpolar
current that kept Antarctica.
●90% of the Earth’s total ice volume is held in
Antarctica, leaving the continent devoid of al
vegetation, structures, and inhabitants.
●Icebergs around in antarctica, some of which
are the size of entire nations.(the size of
Belgium was the largest reported).
Human Impact
●The rapid increase of human populations
has left us battling, limited resources, and
the unmitigated burning burning of fossil.
●Emission of carbon dioxide causing global
warming, climate change.
●Antarctica is place to about climate (past,
present and future).
●Ice-cores half million year old carbon.
●Writer working on program called
“Students on Ice”.
●According to head (Geoff Green) high
school students are policy makers.
●Antarctica → Simple ecosystem
→Lack of biodiversity
●Little changes in the environment have big
repercussions.
Walk on the ocean
●For the author, his Antarctic experience as full of
epiphanies but best occurred was the Antarctic
circles at 65.5 degrees south.
●The ship, the Shokalskiy(The ship), wedged into
the thick white ice between the peninsula and the
tadpole island which prevented the travel.
●The captain decided to tread back to the north.
They climbed down the gangplank(woodden)
and decided to walk on the ocean but prior to
that they were given the gore-tex(
breathable-waterproof fabric) and the glares.
●Walk on the ocean seemed endless and never
ending.
●Underneath the thick ice was living salt water. In
the periphery crabeater seals were stretching
and sunning themselves similar to the stray dogs
under the banyan trees.
Epiphanies refers
to sudden
realisations.
Wedges means
forced into the
narrow space.
Walk on the ocean Continued
●For the author, the experience was
memorable.
●Pondering if it could become warm
and if we would be there to witness it
or would extinct like Dinosaurs.
●She also came to the realisation that if
a lot can happen in million years then
even a day counts and makes a uge
difference for change
