The load transfer mechanism of the cushion

The load transfer mechanism of the cushion under a rigid raft, to
some extent, is much more complex than that under an embankment
because of the interaction between the raft and the cushion. Theories
for column and shallow foundation failure are often used to describe
the working mechanism of the cushion under a rigid raft.

2. the interaction between rigid columns and soft soil was modeled by inducing differential settlement underneath the cushion. The behavior and load transfer mechanism of the cushion were modeled using a multitrapdoor test setup as shown in Fig. 1(a). In this setup, the load transfer and deformations in the cushion induced by the adjacent soils were taken into consideration.
