Ashoka and
Kalinga War
>The Mauryan Empire was at its peak when Ashoka became emperor. Kalinga was the only kingdom
not under Mauryan control and remained independent<
Ashoka's Inscription on the Kalinga War:
Referred to himself as "The Beloved-of-the-Gods, King Piyadasi."
Conquered Kalinga eight years after becoming king.
Casualties of the war: 150,000 people were deported*
100,000 people were killed
Many more died from other causes
After the conquest, Ashoka experienced deep remorse for his actions.
He developed a strong inclination towards dhamma (✨righteousness✨) and began to promote
peace and non-violence.

*Expel (a foreigner) from a country, typically on the
grounds of illegal status or for having committed a
crime.
Dhamma is derived from the Pali word meaning 'religious duty', equivalent to the
Sanskrit word 'dharma'.
>>Ashoka's dhamma did not involve:
Worship of a God
Performance of sacrifices
>>Ashoka believed that as an emperor, he should guide his subjects like a father guiding his
children with moral teachings.
>>His dhamma was inspired by the teachings of the Buddha.
>>Dhamma Mahamatta were appointed officials who traveled to spread dhamma.
>>Through dhamma, Ashoka aimed to promote:
Tolerance
Non-violence
Co-existence
Respect for elders
>>Ashoka instructed his people to:
Follow the path of ahimsa (non-violence)
Speak the truth
Respect other religions

>>Buildings in the city:
Houses were made of bricks and wood.

Land revenue was the main source of income:
Fixed between one-fourth and one-sixth of the produce, depending on soil fertility.
Trade was well-developed and contributed significantly to revenue.
>>Important trading centres:

Arthashastra clearly mentions about several taxes, like forest, mines and water tax. All
the money collected through tax was spent on paying salaries to government officers,
public welfare activities, charities, building roads and hospitals and for maintaining the
army
