THE MEANING OF SIGNS What is the nature of relation between signifier and signified? In other words, how do sign mean? When Emely Dickinson uses in her poem words like “rose” or “rosemary”, these words point to objects that grow in the real gardens of the real world.

SIGNIFIER Red rose with a green stem.

SIGNIFIED A symbol of passion and love – this is what the rose represent.

DENOTATIVE VS CONNOTATIVE The denotation of a word is its explicit definition as listed in a dictionary. Let’s use the word “home” as an example. The denotative or literal meaning of “ home ” is “ a place where one lives; a residence.” Hint: Denotation, denotative, definition, and dictionary all start with the letter ‘D.

CONNOTATION set of associations that a word usually brings to mind . The connotative meaning of “home” is a place of security, comfort, and family.

ICONS a picture, image, or other representation.

ICONIC relating to, or having the characteristics of an icon.
