The Phases of the Moon

What are the phases of the moon? 01

What are the phases of the moon? The lunar phases or phases of the Moon are the apparent changes in the visible portion of the Moon, depending on how illuminated it is by its position relative to the Earth and the Sun. These are not actual changes in the nature of our only satellite, but rather its relative position and illumination, thus allowing us to observe more or less of its surface with the naked eye. To each position, thus, we give the name of a phase. Following these lunar phases, man has created the lunar calendar.

The phases of the Moon compose, in their totality, a cycle of 28 days of duration that we know as lunation or lunar cycle, which goes from the total illumination of the Moon until its total occultation. How long does a lunar cycle last? The explanation for this lunar cycle has to do with the Moon's orbit around the planet Earth, which is completed in its entirety every four weeks. This is known as a sidereal month. J F M A M J J A S O N D 5 4 5 3 3 1 1 7 6 5 4 3 12 11 12 11 10 9 9 15 13 12 10 10 19 18 20 19 19 17 16 21 20 19 18 18 28 26 28 26 25 24 23 29 28 27 26 26 30

What are the phases of the moon? 02

The main phases through which the satellite passes are four and are known as: new moon, first quarter, full moon and third quarter Until reaching these, there are intermediate phases known as: waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous and waning crescent. What are the phases of the moon?

New moon It is the first phase of the lunar cycle and the satellite can hardly be perceived. This happens because the part of the moon facing the Earth is not illuminated by the Sun. In this phase, the moon rises and sets at the same time as the sun, between 6 am and 6 pm. After this phase, the illumination of the satellite becomes increasingly greater

In the northern hemisphere it appears illuminated on the right side gradually, from the new moon until almost half of the moon is illuminated. At this stage, the moon can be seen during the day and sets before astronomical midnight. Waxing crescent

First quarter It is the first phase of the lunar cycle and the satellite can hardly be perceived. This happens because the part of the moon facing the Earth is not illuminated by the Sun. In this phase, the moon rises and sets at the same time as the sun, between 6 am and 6 pm. After this phase, the illumination of the satellite becomes increasingly greater.

Also known as the crescent gibbous, the moon gradually takes on a convex shape that gets progressively larger as the days go by. It is visible throughout the afternoon and most of the night. Waxing gibbous

Full moon It happens when the face of the moon pointing towards the earth is fully illuminated by the sun. In this phase the moon can be seen all night from our planet.

It happens when the luminous part of the moon begins to decrease progressively. In this phase, the moon is visible most of the night and at dawn. Waning gibbous

Half of the moon is illuminated on the left side in the northern hemisphere and vice versa in the southern hemisphere. It is visible especially during the early morning and part of the morning. Third quarter

It is the last phase before a new moon cycle begins again. It can be seen concave with a minimal part of its left side illuminated. Waning crescent

Importance of the phases of the moon 03

Importance of the phases of the moon The phases of the moon are part of the astronomical phenomena that mankind has observed since ancient times, and on the basis of which it has established numerous calendars. Lunar calendars were widely used by ancient cultures such as the Egyptians, so, according to popular culture, the lunar phases could affect the growth of crops, human hair and even the development of gestation and childbirth.
