The General Purposes of the Author Quarter 1 Module 3

“ Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s.”

Stephen King explained that a writer is responsible in translating what he sees in his mind into words on pages. If he does this effectively, then the reader can experience what he (the writer) has penned in his story. In other words, his purpose of writing is revealed to the reader through his narration and description of the different story elements unified.

Now in relation to film, what could be a screenplay writer’s purpose in scripting a story for a film?

Generally, a film has the purposes of to entertain and to inform . It goes hand in hand with why an audience want to watch a film – to be entertained and to be informed .

Most of the time, something that we view for information purposes can be easily identified. Simply because the writer’s purpose is directly and explicitly known from its genre or its theme.

What is the Genre of the film Whisper of the Heart?

"Whisper of the Heart" is a Japanese animated film directed by Yoshifumi Kondō and produced by Studio Ghibli. It is primarily categorized as a romance and coming-of-age drama or a slice-of-life film . The movie follows the story of a young girl named Shizuku Tsukishima as she discovers her passion for writing and her journey of self-discovery during her adolescence. While there are elements of romance and fantasy in the film, its core focus is on personal growth and the pursuit of one's dreams, making it primarily a coming-of-age drama.

Identifying a movie's purpose through its setting and plot requires a careful analysis of both elements and how they contribute to the overall themes and messages of the film. Here are some steps you can take to determine a movie's purpose through these aspects: Identifying the purpose by analyzing the setting and plot

Take note of the time period, location, and environment depicted in the film. The setting often plays a significant role in conveying the movie's purpose. Consider how the setting impacts the characters and their development. Does it create challenges, opportunities, or conflicts for them? Analyze the atmosphere and mood that the setting creates. 1. Examining the SETTING

Like other films, the setting plays an important role in communicating the writer’s purpose. This is because it serves to anchor the story plot and characterization of actors. In other words, it gives context to the film .

"Whisper of the Heart" is set in contemporary Tokyo, Japan. The modernity and fast-paced nature of Tokyo create a sense of busyness and complexity that mirrors the challenges and uncertainties of Shaizuku's adolescent life. URBAN ENVIRONMENT

SUB-URBAN NEIGHBORHOOD Shizuku Tsukishima's home is located in a suburban neighborhood on the outskirts of Tokyo. This setting provides a sense of community and familiarity.

THE ANTIQUE SHOP The antique shop where Shizuku discovers the antique cat figurine is a key setting in the film. It is a quaint and charming place filled with unique and nostalgic items. The shop represents a link to the past and a connection to tradition, standing in contrast to the fast-paced urban life of Tokyo. It symbolizes the importance of history and the value of preserving cultural heritage.

THE SCHOOL AND LIBRARY Shizuku's school and the library she frequents are additional settings that contribute to the story. The library represents a place of learning and inspiration, where Shizuku discovers her passion for reading and writing.

Break down the plot into its key components, including the central conflict, character arcs, and major events. Look for recurring themes or motifs within the plot. These can provide clues about the movie's purpose. For example, a movie with a recurring theme of redemption may be exploring the idea of personal growth and second chances. Pay attention to the character's goals and desires. What are they trying to achieve throughout the story, and how does this relate to the film's purpose? 2. Examining the PLOT

The central plot revolves around Shizuku's discovery of a cat figurine at the antique shop and her quest to learn more about it, which leads her to a journey of self-discovery. As Shizuku delves into her writing and her connection to the cat figurine's owner, she undergoes personal growth, gains confidence in her abilities, and finds her own purpose in life. The plot emphasizes the importance of pursuing one's passions, self-discovery, and the transformative power of creativity. A summary of the plot of Whisper of the Heart

As she investigates the figurine's origins, she unravels the story of its creator, Baron Humbert von Gikkingen , and his connection to a beautiful cat named Louise. This discovery inspires her to write her own story, "Whisper of the Heart," and explore her creative talents. Shizuku's relationship with Seiji deepens as they work together to pursue their respective dreams. RISING ACTION

PERFORMANCE TASK Task : A Guided Spec Script A ‘spec script’ is short for “speculative screenplay.” You write a spec on the speculation that what you wrote is good enough to be taken by film producers and eventually be used for a film.

For this activity, compose your spec script for an existing television series of your choice. This means that you may use existing characters and settings of your chosen TV series. However, you will just compose a sample of it. A major criterion for your sample spec script is that it should have a subtext.
