Introduction
Today, we are going to appreciate a poem, in
which the poet, Coates Kinney is recalls his
childhood memories of rainy season.

At night, dark clouds cover the starry sky.
The writer feels the nature is echoing his
emotions as it rains gently as if the
melancholy clouds are crying.
When the humid shadows hover
Over all the starry spheres,
And the melancholy darkness
Gently weeps in rainy tears,

The poet lies on his cozy bed
listening to the patter of soft rain
on the roof. He enjoys the sound,
the melody of nature and
reenergize himself. He gets
recovered from his melancholy
mood.
What a bliss to press the pillow
Of a cottage-chamber bed,
And lie listening to the patter
Of the soft rain overhead!

Every tinkle on the shingles
Has an echo in the heart;
And a thousand dreamy fancies
Into busy being start,
The poet listens to the sound
of the rain lying in his cozy
bed. Every tinkle on the roof
echoes in his heart. He
recollects the memories
of his childhood to young
hood.

And a thousand recollections
Weave their air-threads into woof,
As I listen to the patter
Of the rain upon the roof.
As he is listening to the continuous
falling of the raindrops on his roof,
all his memories are coming back to
him, they are not separated from
each other.
Instead all of his memories seem to
have formed a patchwork by
becoming tangled with one
another.

The single memory that comes to him is of his mother. He
pictures her face as she used to look at him. He was her
darling dreamer. He recalls how she used to love his
siblings.
They were her darlings and she taught them to dream ,she
used to let them enjoy dreams till the sunrise.
Now in memory comes my mother,
As she used in years agone,
To regard the darling dreamers
Ere she left them till the dawn:

The poet still feels the fond look of his mother
whenever he listens the patter of rain.
O! I feel her fond look on me
As I list to this refrain Which
is played upon the shingles
By the patter of the rain.

THEME (Notebook)

The theme of the poem is the healing
power of rain. The musical sound of
raindrops falling on the rooftop at night
has the ability to renew sweet memories
and rouse fancies in a busy mind.
The rain thus soothes and comforts an
overworked mind by taking it back to its
lovely past. Some of our best memories in
life are associated with rain.

•The writer is lying in his bed.

•He heard the sound of the clouds.

•Suddenly the quietness of the environment disappeared.

•It started raining lightly.

•The roof is of tin so rain creates beautiful sound.

•The sound echoed in heart of the poet.

•He remembered a number of things.

•Some memories are sweets and some are said.

•The sound of rain appeared to be a bliss to the poet.

Message… Notebook
The message of the poem Rain on the Roof is that
nature has significant effect on humans.
The falling of rain affects the emotions of the poet.
He beings to memorise his past ,especially his
mother and her love.
In a way, the rain heals the poet’s inner self as it
heals the earth.
The poet fells bliss while listening to the sound of
rain.

VALUE POINTS
The poet says that when the sky is full of clouds ,which are full of
water and move around in the sky and the sad darkness of the
night is wiped off by the raindrops, which seem like tears falling
from the sky.

The poet is comparing rain drops to tears and he says that the dark
sky which seems to be very sad, appears as if it was crying and the
rain drops are the tears shed by it.

He adds that it is like a blessing to lie on the bed in his room and
listen to the sound made by raindrops falling on the roof.

•Do you like rain?

•What do you do when it
rains
steadily or heavily?•When the sky is covered with dark
clouds and it starts raining, have you
ever listened to the patter of soft rain
on the roof?
What thoughts flashed through your
mind as you heard this melody of
nature?
