Guide Questions What is research design? What are the two types of research design? What are the elements and parts of a research design ?
Learning Competencies: Define a research design Discuss the two types of research design Discuss the elements and parts of a research design
Give the different research design methods and explain how method is used? Qualitative Research Design Methods Quantitative Research Design Methods
The Research Design
A research design refers to the action plan and research procedures developed by the researcher in order to successfully answer the research problem.
Two Major Types O f Research Design
Qualitative Research Design => this design explores and understands a topic or problem through a process that involves questions and procedures, data collection, data analysis, and data interpretation.
Quantitative Research Design => objective theories as well as hypotheses are tested through the examination of the relationship among concepts or variables, which can be measured through the use of research instruments like statistical procedures.
Elements of a Research Design A good research design must have a well-defined and clearly stated research problem. It should explain the research method and technique to be used for the collection and analysis of data. It must explain the approach to be implemented in the processing and analysis of data.
Parts of Research Design A research design must contain the following essential parts: The researcher must clearly identify and state the purpose or objective of the research. The researcher must identify the nature of the study, which can be causal or correlational.
3. The researcher must discuss the extent of his or her interference or involvement in the study. 4. The researcher must explain the setting of the research. 5. The research design must explain the unit of analysis or the population to be observed, measured, studied, and analyzed.
6. The research design must specify the time dimension of the study . 7. The research design must clearly discuss the data collection method or research methodology to be used in the study. 8. The research design must explain the sampling method to be used in the research.
Analyzing Research Designs for 12-Athena Directions: Download any of the documents online. Then, read the research design part and analyze how the design is created. Develop a research design. Use the template below. Name: Topic: Research Problem: Research Design: Purpose or Objectives of the Study . Is the purpose of the research to explore a new problem or topic? Is it to provide a very detailed and accurate landscape of the topic? Is it to elaborate or explain a theory or to provide explanations to a problem or theory? State your answer clearly and fully. Output #1: Research Design
2. Nature of the study . Is the research a causal or correlational study? Explain your answer clearly and fully. 3. Extent of your interference in the study . Do you interfere with variables in the study? Did you adjust variables to study the outcome or impact of the intervention on the dependent variable? Did you change specific variables in the research setting? Discuss your answer fully. 4. Setting of the research . Will the research be conducted in a normal or contrived setting? Explain your answer clearly and fully. 5. Unit of analysis . Who are the people or groups of people under study? Describe them. 6. Time dimension of the study. Is it cross-sectional or longitudinal study? Explain your answer clearly and fully.
