The Role of Social Media and Digital Platforms in the Issue of West Philippine Sea

Group 9 Members Torano, Arlyn May Tanarte, Mary Christian Joy Bolado, Jian Magbologtong, Jhondel

The West Philippine Sea is a term used by the Philippines to refer to the eastern parts of the South China Sea that are within its exclusive economic zone. The issue surrounding this area primarily involves territorial disputes between the Philippines and China, among other neighboring countries. These disputes are rooted in overlapping claims over islands, reefs, and maritime resources, leading to tensions and international legal battles, such as the 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in favor of the Philippines.

Social media plays a significant role in raising public awareness about the West Philippine Sea issue. It serves as a platform for sharing information, news updates, and opinions, allowing people to engage in discussions and form their perspectives on the matter. Social media also amplifies voices that might otherwise be unheard, providing a space for advocacy and activism.

Various types of social media platforms.

Facebook Widely used for sharing news articles, personal opinions, and organizing community groups focused on the issue.

Twitter Offers real-time updates and a space for quick exchanges of ideas and information through hashtags and threads.

YouTube Hosts documentaries, vlogs, and educational content that delve deeper into the historical and geopolitical aspects of the dispute.

Instagram Utilized for visual storytelling, sharing infographics, and raising awareness through impactful images and captions.
