About Arches Although there is evidence that arches were used in some Mesopotamian brick architecture, the Romans are credited with its widespread use as they were the first civilization to apply the technology to different types of structures. The Romans realized that the arch is one of the most stable kind of support structures due to it being a 'pure compression' form. What this means is that as forces in the arch are directed towards the ground because of gravitational force, the arch pushes up at the base, and this force is called 'thrust’. At lower points on the arch the outward thrust is much higher than on higher points, stabilizing the structure.
About Roman Triumphal Arch The triumphal arch was a decorative and commemorative architecture first built by the Romans to honor the people involved in military and political victories. Did not really have a practical use. (Other than shelter from the rain)

Arch of Constantine The Emperor Constantine, called Constantine the Great, was significant for several reasons. These include his political transformation of the Roman Empire, his support for Christianity, and his founding of Constantinople (modern day Istanbul). Constantine’s status as an agent of change also extended into the realms of art and architecture. The Triumphal Arch of Constantine in Rome is not only a superb example of the ideological and stylistic changes Constantine’s reign brought to art, but also demonstrates the emperor’s careful adherence to traditional forms of Roman Imperial art and architecture.
History of Roman Triumphal Arches The earliest recorded triumphal arches were built in Rome, in the Form Boarium (fish and meat market) and the Circus Maximus (stadium) during the second century BCE by a man named L.Sertinius . Their availability of a large variety of materials as well as the development of much better concrete and mortars made it possible for the Romans to build more complex structures then any civilization before, which led to the building of architectural structures like the triumphal arch to become widespread across the empire.
Influence of the Triumphal Arch Not only has the plain arch become a widespread architectural structure used all around the world, the triumphal arch has been used by many countries and civilizations since the fall of the Roman Empire, and especially since the 15th century CE. Dozens of triumphal arches have been built by countries such as France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain and even the United States.
