TYPES OF LEARNING AND TEACHING ACTIVITIES
Learning tasks and activities in the
Silent Way have the function of
encouraging and shaping student
oral response without unnecessary
modeling from the teacher.
Basic to the
method are simple linguistic tasks.
Responses to commands, questions,
and visual cues.

Role of instruccional Materias
He develops:
Independence,
Autonomy, and responsibility.
Inner criteria and corrects
himself.
He makes generalizations,
conclusions and interacts with
each other and suggest
alternatives to each other.
The learner plays the role of a :
Teacher,
Student
Problem solver
Self-evaluator.
Learner roles
Set of colored rods.
color-coded pronunciation and
vocabulary wall charts.
pointer
Reading/writing exercises,
The teacher plays the role of a :
Neutral observer neither elated by
correct performance nor
discouraged by error.
In class:

He is silent as much as possible.
Encourages learners to produce as
much language as possible.
Monitor silently learners' interactions
with each other.
Create an environment that
encourages that facilitates learning.
Use gestures, charts, and
manipulatives in order to elicit and
shape student responses.
The materials are designed for
manipulation by the
students as well as by the teacher,
independently and cooperatively,
in promoting language learning.

Procedure
A Silent Way lesson:
Typically follows a standard
format.
The teacher :
Models the approppriate sound.
silently points to individual symbols and
combinations.
Monitors students utterances.
After pronunciation, sentence patterns and
vocabulary are practiced.
Models an utterance.
Create a situation to practice the structure
given.
Conclusion
The innovations in this method derive primarily
from:
The manner in which classroom activities are
organized.
The indirect role of the teacher to direct and
monitor learner performance.
The responsibility placed upon learners to
figure out and test how the language works.
Materials used to elicit and practice language.
The silent way is based on the idea that teachers
should be as silent as possible during a class but
learners should be encouraged to speak as much as
possible.
