Private life Was born Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque , New Mexico . M other was a 16-year-old high school student, father - a bike shop owner. After divorce, mother married Cuban immigrant Miguel "Mike" Bezos on 1968 ; Mike adopted Jeffrey. Growing up , worked summers on his grandfather's ranch repairing Caterpillar tractors . As a child, o ften displayed scientific interests and technological proficiency .

Private life (2) As a teenager, worked at McDonald's. A ttended the Student Science Training Program at the University of Florida . Finished high school as valedictorian , a National Merit Scholar , and a Silver Knight Award winner . In 1986, graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Science degrees in electrical engineering and computer science . In 1993 married a novelist MacKenzie Tuttle with whom has four children: three sons , and one daughter adopted from China . I n March 2003, was one of three passengers in a helicopter that crashed in West Texas .

Early career W as offered jobs at Intel , Bell Labs , and Andersen Consulting , among others . W orked at Fitel . W as promoted to head of development and director of customer service at Fitel . T ransitioned into the banking industry and became a product manager at Bankers Trus t . J oined D. E. Shaw & Co . B ecame D. E. Shaw's fourth senior vice- president at the age of 30 .

Amazon In late 1993, decided to start an online bookstore . O n July 5, 199 5 started with an initial seed investment of $1 million from family and friends, in the garage of his house. N amed his new company Amazon after the Amazon River . H ad always planned to expand to other products . In 1998, diversified into the online sale of music, gifts and pharmacy sections . In late 2002, rapid spending from Amazon caused it financial distress when revenues stagnated .

Blue Origin In 2000 , founded Blue Origin . In 2006 , purchased a large tract of land in West Texas for a launch and test facility . September 2011, one of the company's prototype s crashed during a test flight . In 2015, Bezos announced that a new orbital launch vehicle was under development . I n November 2015 , New Shepard space vehicle successfully rocketed into space . In December 2017, New Shepard successfully flew and landed dummy passengers . The primary goal of Blue Origin is to preserve the natural resources of Earth by making the human species multi-planetary .
