THE TAPI BASIN The Tapti River is a river in central India located to the south of the Narmada river which flows westwards before draining into the Arabian Sea. The river has a length of around 700km and flows through the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

THE TAPI BASIN The Tapi basin occupies total 2.4 percent of geographical area of country. Tapi River rises near  Multai  in the Betual district of Madhya pradesh . Cultivable area in the Basin is 4.3 million hectare, which is total 2.2 percent of the total cultivable area in the country.

THE TAPI BASIN It also flows in a rift valley parallel to the Narmada but it is much shorter in length. The coastal plains between Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea are very narrow. Hence, the coastal rivers are short. The main west flowing rivers are Sabarmati, Mahi, Bharatpuzha and Periyar   . The Tapti River's three major tributaries—the Purna , Girna , and Panjhra —flow from the south in Maharashtra state .
