Tree in “The Tree of Man” symbolises the life of a man. The narration starts with the basic element of the nature i.e. land. From the beginning to the end, the story scarcely deviates from the land where Stan and Amy lives. Stan’s life is totally attached to the piece of land. It is the landscape that he loves but not the people.
They experience their life through the force of the natural elements. Land, water, fire, wood A sense of cosmic nature in the novel Force of storm – power of god (storm awakes their soul ) Stan’s attachment with the land, garden and dog Amy’s attachment with the cow and her garden
Encounter with the water and the fire, offers us a chance to look into human’s nature. Flood provided a wider arena for the people to play on with their inner nature, which is exposed during these times. The bushfire also makes stan to open his soul and he was full of sparkle of thoughts. These natural disasters makes him to realise his own significance, for his spiritual release.
The fire in the settlement not only destroys the trees and houses but also the very fabric of socially approved construction of identity. “Each man remembered his house… which until now he had considered solid, and all those objects he had accumulated, and without which he would not have been himself.”
