1. Arguable Themes In Lord Of The Flies
Theme can be defined as the subject of a talk, piece of writing, a person's thoughts, or a
topic. Often, themes are found in novels or stories, fake or fiction, every work containing a
central idea that carries a novel and gives it reason to exist. One novel that exemplifies a
strong arguable theme is Lord of the Flies by William Golding. As described by E.L Epstein,
"The theme is an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature."
Because of this central focus, readers have the opportunity to see the societal flaws in Golding's
Lord of the Flies and trace them back to the flaws discerned in human nature.

For example, in Ralph exists the nature of humanity that strives for order and consensus. Ralph
embodies this in his belief of the conch, in the idea of being saved off the island, as well as
possessing the basic element that human impulses can be geared towards the general good. For
example, when Ralph says "If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us," (22) he is the
one who explores problem solving options such as whether there are other people on the island.
Piggy however, embodies the nature of humanity that uses rationalism to solve problems. Piggy's
glasses as being the source of fire is one such example of this. At the same time, Piggy echoes a
rational worldly approach by saying "Which is better–to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill? ...
law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?" (67). Piggy's claim is that life is "scientific"
and faith in logic are elements that he believes are natural to the state of humanity. Golding asserts
that the nature of humanity contains a malevolent side to it. Characters like Jack and Roger

away, both characters reveal how the desire for power and a particular cruelty exist in the heart of

the new girl just wants to make friends. Heather doesn't know what is really going on with
Melinda because she just moved to town. Heather has no idea what happened the night when
Melinda called the police, which busted a summer party. In fact, no one knows, except for
Melinda, what happened to her at the party? She is convinced that because she is a victim, no one
understands her. The whole world, including her world, is out to get her and so it is best for her
to remain silent. Ironically, the person Melinda finds as the outlet to help her express her
feelings is her art teacher, Mr. Freeman. In a class assignment, Melinda is assigned to create an art
project based on a tree. She begins to express her inner angst through this art project. At one point,
she uses dried bones to sculpt a picture of a skeleton. Then she glues broken knives and forks to
the project so that the bones look like the plastic utensils are stabbing them. It is a grim depiction of
how Melinda feels, and is immediately praised by Mr. Freeman.

There's a certain ''stage fear'', his parents want him to perform ''the perfect kid'' stand up act but he
reflects the irony of the whole situation. When he tries to go up the stairs once again (he tries a
few times to get away from such a crowded place) we see a woman's hand just grab his shoulder,
almost imperatively just catching him saying ''where are you going?''. All the time he is grabbed
by someone or speaks to someone there they all treat him as if he was a child, (caressing him, the
way they talk to him) when in fact he is in his twenties. When he finally gets away from all the
people, he goes up to his room and as soon as he shuts the door immediately all the party noise

his body language as saying that he's relieved, almost saying ''I finally got away from all those

In the play Hamlet there are many themes that were brought to our attention; Madness, Revenge,
Mortality, Religion, Incest, Family, and Death. In this essay we will be discussing two of these
themes that we found intriguing, the two themes are Death, and Revenge.
(2.2.487–488) In Act 2 Hamlet asks for a speech, and the First Player delivers a description of the
killing of old, white haired King Priam. Pyrrhus (The Killer), swings his sword at King Priam, and

ground. For an instant, with his sword held above Priam's head, Pyrrhus listens to the rumble of the

Vengeance is Revenge but Pyrrhus does not represent the same kind of emotions that Hamlet has
backing his intentions for revenge. The First Player weeps as he tells Hamlet the story of Queen
Hecuba's grief for her husband. Hamlet thinks to himself that the First Player feels more strongly for
Queen Hecuba then Hamlet does for his father. Hamlet begins to unravel and realize that he's still
talking rather than taking action.

He says that he wants to take revenge but does not have the heart in him to do it. This helps to
develop the play because we see that Hamlet is reluctant to take revenge for his father because he
doesn't really know the truth of what happened. After the death of Hamlet's father Hamlet is
obsessed with the idea of death. He ponders both the spiritual aftermath of death, embodied in the
ghost, and the physical remainders of the dead, such as by Yorick's skull and the decaying corpses
in the cemetery. The question of his own death plagues Hamlet as well, as he repeatedly
contemplates whether or not suicide is a morally legitimate action in an unbearably painful world.

Macbeth killed his entire family. He felt guilty for living his family alone in Scotland without

is Lady Macbeth sleeping walking towards the end of the play. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth killed
the king of Scotland (Duncan) and she is feeling guilty for what she has done. Also, she doesn't
like what her husband has done like killing Macduff's whole family. She feels as if she was
responsible for that. In a result of that she ends up sleep walking and eventually killing herself
because she couldn't live with the guilt anymore. The guilt of killing Duncan literally ate at Lady

Another one of the main objectives in the story "Harrison Bergeron" was that everyone must have
the same strengths and weaknesses. It was shown an ample amount of times in the story that "all
this quality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the constitution (Vonnegut
234)." One person that was really affected by this amendment, because he was considered strong,
was Harrison. He was taken from his parents at the young age of 14, and had many handicaps.
"Nobody had ever borne heavier handicaps (Vonnegut 236)" than Harrison. The government knew
that he was of the strong, and the ladies considered him handsome, so they made sure that his
handicaps would make him look as if he was a hideous creature. This is one main point which
showed that everyone must have the same strengths and weaknesses and if they did not and broke
loss of the handicaps they would die or be kill like Harrison was.
Last but not least, one of the themes objectives was to make everyone look alike and be or the

Themes can make a Story In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is home to many
themes that play a large part in the story and are the main focus of the readers as well. Some of
these main themes include the difference in social classes, isolation & dissatisfaction, and
symbolism. Firstly, we have a very prominent theme shown as the differences of social classes.
Social is an unusual theme that states that people are separated due to certain ways of life that they
live. In the 1920's wealth was decided by how much money that you had and how you had acquired
that money. If you had a lot of money you were an upper–class man, if you had little to know the
money you were in the lower class. In the book Gatsby's class in compared to the character Tom,
Tom was born into a wealthy family and Gatsby earned his through means of business discussed
in the story. This makes Tom believe that they don't share the same class and that Gatsby is
