INTRODCTION Every profession has a code of ethics that outlines the ethical responsibilities of practicing as a member of that profession. Codes of ethics from different professions might focus on issues specific to practice in that field, but all share elements regarding the importance of honesty and not taking actions that will lead to harm to others.

Codes of ethics for the nursing profession tend to focus on professional behavior and making sure that decision-making is patient driven as much as possible .

Ethical Responsibilities of Nurses Respect for Others Commitment to Patient Honesty and Self-Integrity Professional Responsibilities

Respect for Others A nurse must respect the dignity and value of patients and colleagues, and treat all persons equally regardless of personal attributes or medical condition. Related to this is the responsibility to always respect the patient's right to self-determination in her medical care.

Commitment to Patient One of a nurse's primary ethical responsibilities is to work with the patient to provide care that maximally enables the physical, emotional and social well-being of the patient. A nurse is also responsible for protecting and advocating for patient safety and rights, especially in terms of upholding the highest standards of patient privacy and confidentiality according to the law.

Honesty and Self-Integrity Nurses also have an ethical responsibility to be honest with patients and colleagues, and to maintain self-integrity and high personal moral standards. By the same token, nurses have a personal responsibility to maintain professional competence and strive towards personal and professional growth so as to provide the best possible care to patients.

Professional Responsibilities A nurse also has a number of ethical responsibilities relating to the profession of nursing and her specialty. One key responsibility is to always strive to improve both health care environments and conditions of employment to maximize the quality of health care delivery.

Nurses also have a responsibility to work with the public and other medical professionals to foster local school or community, national and international efforts to improve health care systems on all levels.

Principles of Professional Ethics in the Therapeutic Relationship 1. The therapist practices a client-centered approach. Regarding the care of the client, this approach indicates that the client’s wishes and needs are placed higher in priority to what the therapist considers most important. 2. The therapist holds the client in high esteem. The therapist respects the individuality of each client and honors his or her dignity as a human being.

3. The therapist expresses empathy toward the client. In the therapeutic relationship, empathy embodies the ability to understand the perspective of a client expressing concerns, problems and challenges. 4. The therapist practices active listening. This type of listening involves intending to truly understand what the client is expressing via verbal and nonverbal communication.

5. Silent attunement This is the concept that a client and therapist become bonded energetically through treatment. Meaning, the therapist’s total focus remains on the client with no distractions interfering the session either physically within the room or mentally within the therapist’s mind.

6. Awareness The therapist remains acutely aware of the needs of the client during the session. Aspects pertaining to the client’s sensory sensitivities during a session, including nonverbal cues and perceptions of touch, are mindfully monitored.

7.Therapeutic Touch All professional touch performed within the construct of the therapeutic relationship is therapeutic in nature and performed with a purpose that is in alignment with the client’s treatment goals.

7 .Boundaries are physical and nonphysical limits determined by individuals to ensure security, safety and well-being. Therapists must be conscious of boundaries when interacting with clients and employ awareness in understanding boundaries created by clients. Boundaries will not be equal among all clients.

9 .Transference is the displacement or transfer of feelings, thoughts or behaviors related to a significant person or event onto someone else, such as a therapist. Below is a list of signs of transference by clients. 10 .Counter-transference is displacement or transfer of feelings, thoughts or behaviors related to a significant person or event onto a client by a therapist. Below is a list of signs of counter-transference by therapists.

11 .Dual relationships are defined as relationships in which multiple roles exist between a therapist and client. In the health care field, it is the responsibility of the therapist to be accountable regarding dual relationships and not allow these to proliferate. 12 .Informed Consent Informed consent reflects the client’s right to know and fully participate in his or her care. Writing a statement of informed consent is crucial to the success of a massage practice, yet many massage therapists overlook this vital component.

13 .Right of Refusal Right of refusal is an often overlooked aspect of the therapeutic relationship. Clients have the right to refuse services for any reason and at any time. If they determine that the session should be stopped midway, their needs must be respected.

14.Scope of Practice Your scope of practice encompasses the actions, methods and perspectives of healing allowed to your profession in accordance with legal and ethical considerations.

Johari Window Definition The Johari Window is the psychological model developed by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham, that talks about the relationship and mutual understanding between the group members. In other words, a psychological tool that helps an individual to understand his relationship with himself and with other group members is called as a Johari Window.

Open Self: This quadrant shows the behavior, motives, attitudes, knowledge skills of an individual that he is aware of and is willing to share it with others. The open self is characterized as a state wherein the individual is open and straight forward to himself and others about what he is doing, how is he doing and what are his intentions .

Blind Self: The blind self shows the state of an individual known to others but not known to him. It usually happens, when an individual or a subject copies the behavior of some significant personalities unconsciously since his childhood.

Hidden Self: This quadrant of the Johari window shows the state of an individual known to him but not known to the others. This is generally seen in the individuals who are introvert and do not like to share their private lives with anyone. The individual keeps his feelings, ideas or thoughts to himself and do not disclose it in front of the others.

Unknown Self: The unknown self is the mysterious state of an individual neither known to him, nor others know about it. Often the feelings, thoughts or ideas go so deep down the individual that it becomes difficult for the individual as well for the other people to understand it.

Techniques of Therapeutic Relationship Cultivate a positive outlook Control your emotions Acknowledge others’ expertise. Show a real interest in your colleagues Find one good trait in every co-worker. Practice active listening. Be assertive Practice empathy Maintain your relationships.

Cultivate a positive outlook People gravitate naturally towards a colleague who’s upbeat and optimistic. Additionally, they’re more likely to respond in a positive manner to him or her than to someone who’s negative. Teach yourself to be positive by reminding yourself every day of the good things about your life and your job. If you’re upset about a personal matter, set those feelings aside until after work. And if you’re stressed about a work issue, look for the positive in the situation and try to build on that.

Control your emotions Work isn’t the place to be overly emotional. Whether you’re extremely irritated, severely depressed, or ecstatically happy, take a deep breath and tone your emotions down. Always express yourself in a calm, patient manner.

Acknowledge others’ expertise One of the best ways to build trust at work is to let your co-workers know you appreciate their expertise. Ask for their help on projects, and give credit where credit is due.

Show a real interest in your colleagues. You work side-by-side with your colleagues for eight hours every day, so it’s only logical that you’ll learn something about their lives. For example, someone might be planning to get married while another colleague is earning an advanced degree after work. Make a point of getting to know what’s important to your co-workers. It will help solidify your relationships with them .

Find one good trait in every co-worker Not all of us like every single person we work with. However, you can’t let personal preference get in the way of peak performance. If a colleague’s personality clashes completely with your own, the best way to handle the situation is by finding at least one good trait in that person preferably something professional .

Practice active listening The editors advise practicing active listening. You can do this by maintaining eye contact with the speaker, nodding your head, and repeating what he says in your own words. The speaker will feel respected, and you’re likely to be able to recall the conversation more easily afterwards.

Be assertive Practice According to the HelpGuide.org article “ Effective Communication: Improving Communication Skills in Your Work and Personal Relationships ,” it’s important to be assertive. Be confident in your ability and opinions, and don’t be afraid to express your needs, as well as your limits.

Empathy Gain a well-rounded view of things by putting yourself in other people’s shoes. This will help you develop empathy for others, which in turn goes a long way in finding solutions that work for all involved .

Maintain your relationships Don’t let “out of sight, out of mind” ruin the relationships you’ve carefully built up over the years. Connect with college friends and former colleagues on social media; send them emails; and try to set up face-to-face meetings now and then. This shows your connections that you still value the relationship—and that can go a long way in helping you advance your career
