Presented By Kawsar Ahmad, Ashiny Chandra Pal Agricultural Engineering & Technology Sylhet Agricultural University Thermoperiodism

Definition : Thermoperiodism : A phenomenon in which growth or development is promoted by alternating day and night temperatures . Fig : Plant & Temperature

Temperature for plants Fig : Optimum Temperature for plants Cold Temperature = <10 o C Optimum Temperature = 11-24 o C High Temperature = >25 o C

Effect of Thermoperiodism on Plants and Animals : Reproduction High Temperature favors tuber production Growth and Development Morphology Helps in photosynthesis Seed germination Flowering Productivity

Disadvantages : Too high or too low temperature prevent fruit set Adverse temperatures also cause poor quality Not all plants grow best in the same temperature range . Low temperatures can result in poor growth Photosynthesis slows at low temperatures Since photosynthesis is slowed, growth is slowed and this results in lower yields .
