ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Topic: ECO-FRIENDLY BUDGET OF INR 2000/- Name: Eklavya Dhanorkar Class : Std: IX B Roll No.: 8

WHAT DOES ECO-FRIENDLY MEAN? The basic definition of eco-friendly means: “not harmful to the environment” is a start but doesn’t help us much. It’s an answer that raises even more questions as it doesn’t go into very much detail about what it means to be harmful. But what does that entail? What is eco-friendly and what does it mean to have an eco-friendly lifestyle and make eco-friendly choices?

The Term “Eco-friendly” Is Used To Refer To Products Or Activities That Have Minimal Environmental Impact To Be Truly Eco-friendly, A Product Should Also Have Minimal Impact On Land, Air And Water Resources.

AN ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCT INCORPORATES Recycled Materials While Employing Sustainable Production Methods That Conserve Energy And Reduce Waste. An Eco-friendly Product Prioritises Renewable Resources, Minimizes Emissions And Pollutants Throughout Its Life Cycle, And Aims For The Smallest Possible Ecological Footprint. And Here's The Icing On The Cake: An Eco-friendly Product Is Designed To Be Easily Recyclable Or Biodegradable Once It Has Served Its Purpose, Promoting A Circular Economy And Reducing The Burden On Landfills .

GENERAL ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS THAT COST LESS Eco-Friendly Disposable Cutlery Eco-friendly disposable plates/kitchenware are made using palm leaves, areca plant leaves, or dry sheaths of Betel nut trees. They are made from fallen leaves/sheaths through an eco-friendly process and are completely biodegradable and compostable. 2. Bio-degradable Garbage Bags These are biodegradable disposable garbage bags that are now widely used for garbage packaging purposes. The bio-degradable garbage bags are made from Natural Starch, Vegetable Oil Derivatives And Vegetable Waste.

3. Reusable Vegetable Bags These multi-size reusable, washable, multipurpose, eco-friendly cotton bags. These fruits and vegetable bags are non-toxic and chemical-less made from natural cotton fabric. 4. Bamboo Earbuds These are Wooden Double Head Cotton Ear Buds for cleaning ears and the face, applying or removing make-up, first aid etc. However, instead of the plastic (polyvinyl) stick these have bamboo sticks and so are bio-degradable.

5. Paper Straws The Paper Straws are made from 100% biodegradable and food-safe paper and soy-based ink. Being single-use (use & throw), can serve as an excellent alternative to plastic straws. 6. Recycled plastic It's composed of post-consumer or post-industrial waste plastics such as bottles, bags, containers, and packaging. It consumes less resources and energy than virgin plastic and helps to decrease pollution and waste. Pens, rulers, scissors, and other stationery items can be made from recycled plastic.

ZERO WASTE SCHOOL SUPPLIES After a nice long summer, kids are soon going back to school and there comes the need for some school supplies. Trying to live as frugally as possible and with as little waste as school children can be tricky, but the motto is to find what we have at home already; borrow; buy used; and buy quality and eco-friendly is a must. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or pupil – here’s a practical guide for making your school more green & environmentally friendly.

1. Eco-friendly supplies: Work with school management to identify opportunities to making the switch to eco-friendly bulk supplies, e.g. cleaning products, classroom supplies. 2. Start in the office: A green school needs to start with its staff. Can you cut down on the paper you use by keeping electronic copies instead of printing things out? Little habits all add up, like making sure you switch off your monitor when not in use.

3 . Air pollution campaign: Introduce an air pollution campaign. Reduce idling outside your school and encourage pupils, parents & teachers to walk, cycle, or take local transport. 4. Share or Swap: Add last year’s school uniforms, books or toys and set-up a parent-to-parent uniform swap .

5. Rescue & share your school’s canteen food : Encourage your School canteen to sign-up to redistribute any surplus food , so it doesn’t go to waste. 6. Hold a plastic-waste assembly: Encourage pupils to collect and bring in all the single-use plastic their family generates in a week, to raise awareness on the issue of plastic pollution in a visually striking and tangible way.

7. Food waste diary : Encourage children to keep a weekly food waste diary, recording what food they waste, how much and why it’s wasted. 8. Grow your own: Growing and harvesting food is both rewarding and educational. Dedicate a patch of school grounds for growing food and teaching pupils about the importance of where our food comes from.

THINGS I CONSIDERED FOR AN ECO-FRIENDLY BUDGET OF INR 2000/- Folders—Buy paper or cardboard but avoid the plastic kind so that, when they break, you can recycle the paper. Pens and pencils—Fountain pen is refillable. For highlighter, that are both biodegradable and eco-friendly and made from sustainable wood. When you’re finished with these highlighters, you can throw the stumps into the compost. Utensils — Instead of using disposable utensils, bring your own reusable ones such as metal or bamboo utensils. These can be washed and used again, reducing waste and saving resources. Reusable utensils are a convenient and eco-friendly

Ruler—Buy a durable stainless steel ruler or a wood ruler, not plastic. Lunch boxes—Invest in a reusable bento box or thermal soup container as well as a reusable metal bottle, reusable cutlery, and cloth napkins. If you have to wrap food, use either a cloth sandwich bag or beeswax wrap to avoid unwanted waste. Print paper—Buy only 100% recycled paper or FSC-certified paper, and make sure it’s not bleached. Notebooks—Buy a durable notebook made with 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Books—Try to borrow, buy used, or download books before buying new ones. Local and organic options — these options often have a smaller carbon footprint than imported or conventionally grown produce.

AN ECO-FRIENDLY BUDGET OF INR 2000/-
