MOVEMENTS OF
THORACIC CAGE
Bucket Handle Movement refers to the lateral (side-to-side)
expansion of the rib cage during inspiration, mainly due to the
action of intercostal muscles.
Explanation:
- The external intercostal muscles contract during inspiration.
- This raises the ribs upward and outward , especially the middle parts of
the ribs.
- This motion resembles the movement of a bucket handle being lifted
on both sides.
Effect:
- Increases the transverse diameter of the thoracic cavity.
- Allows more air to enter the lungs.
Bucket Handle Movement
Occurs mainly in the upper ribs (2nd to 6th).
- On inspiration, the sternum and anterior ends of
ribs move upward and outward, like a hand pump
handle.
- This increases the anteroposterior diameter of the
thoracic cavity.
- Helps in expanding the lungs more during deep
breathing.
Pump Handle (Hand Pump) Movement
This occurs during inspiration.
- The diaphragm contracts and moves downward like a
piston.
- This increases the vertical diameter of the thoracic cavity.
- It decreases intrathoracic pressure and allows air to flow
into the lungs.
- Seen mainly in quiet breathing and more prominently in
children.
