Time for safety measures
Introduction Safety measures are activities and precautions taken to improve safety, i.e. reduce risk related to human health. Common safety measures include: Chemical analysis. Destructive testing of samples.
Why safety measures are important Safety procedures can help decrease the number of workplace incidents. ... Operational managers are also an important part of enforcing safety procedures. Managers are responsible for reviewing employee actions and making sure company policies provide a safe workplace.
4 safety tips for fertilizing your lawn Here are some safety tips to follow before, during, and after fertilizing your lawn. 1.Proper storage . Store fertilizer in a safe place away from children and pets. If you keep your lawn and gardening supplies in a shed, keep it locked. If you store your fertilizer in your garage, make sure it’s kept in a locked cabinet or on a shelf children can’t reach .
2. Wear gloves . Fertilizer contains nitrogen that can cause a chemical burn on your skin. 3.Wear eye protection . It’s always important to wear glasses or goggles when working in your yard.
4.Clean up excess fertilizer on your sidewalk, patio, or driveway . This makes for a safer environment for young children and pets. It also prevents the rain from washing it into your local water system.
Precautions of Fertilizer Application: i . Note that there is sufficient moisture in the fields before applying fertilizers. ii. Ensure uniform distribution of fertilizer on the entire area of operation. iii. Avoid hot-hours or the day while applying (broad-casting) a fertilizer. iv. Choose a fair weather day preferably for broadcasting.
v. Do not top dress the fertilizer when the crop leaves are wet otherwise burning and scorching of leaves may occur. vi. Confirm the compatibility of fertilizers before mixing. vii. Place the fertilizer at least 5-8 cm below the soil surface. viii. Cover the fertilizer furrow immediately.
ix. In double band placement open the bands by keeping nitrogen the planted row in centre. x . In ring placement open the ring near the active root zone of fruit plants (corresponding to the circumference of shoot system). xi. Avoid drilling of fertilizers and seed together especially of legumes as even a small amount of fertilizer may damage germination.
xii. Avoid spraying during hotter period of the day. Spraying in the evening is preferred. Spray again if it rains immediately after spraying. xiii. Foliar application of fertilizers should be avoided on the crops having very small leaves i.e. compound leaf system.
Safe Use Practices for Pesticides Using pesticides safely depends on many things. Some of the most important factors include selecting the appropriate product, and using that product according to the label directions. The label directions are written to minimize the risk of problems and to define the legal uses for the product.
Tips when using pesticides: Make sure kids, pets, and anyone non-essential to the application is out of the area before mixing and applying pesticides. Be sure to wear clothing that will protect you when using pesticides. Consider wearing a long sleeve shirt, long pants, and closed-toe shoes in addition to any other protective clothing or equipment required by the label.
Mix pesticides outdoors or in well-ventilated areas. Mix only what you need to use in the short term to avoid storing or disposing of excess pesticide. Be prepared for a pesticide spill. Have paper towels, sawdust or kitty litter, garbage bags, and non-absorbent gloves on hand to contain the spill. Avoid using excessive amounts of water, as this may only spread the pesticide and could be harmful to the environment.
Read the first aid instructions on the label before using the product. Remove personal items, such as toys, clothing, or tools from the spray area to avoid contamination. When spraying pesticides indoors, make sure the area is well ventilated.
When applying pesticides as a spray or dust outside, avoid windy conditions and close the doors and windows to your home. After using pesticides, wash your hands before smoking or eating.
BASIC PRECAUTIONS IN PESTICIDE USAGE 1. Avoid storage of pesticides in the house premises. 2. Keep only in original container with intact seal. 3. Do not transfer pesticides to other container. 4. Never keep them together with food or feed/ fodder. 5. Keep away from the reach of children and livestock. 6. Do not expose to sun-light or rain water.
7.Use clean water. 8.Always protect your NOSE, EYES, MOUTH, EARS and HANDS. 9.Use hand gloves, face mask and cover your head with cap. 10. Read the label on the container before preparing spray solution. 11. Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew while preparing solution.
12. Apply only at recommended dose and dilution. 13. Do not apply on hot sunny day or strong windy condition. 14. Do not apply just before the rains and also after the rains. 15.Do not apply against the wind direction. 16. Avoid entry of animals and workers in the fields immediately after the spraying.
17. Left over spray solution should not be drained in ponds or water lines etc. 'throw it in barren isolated area, if possible. 18.The used/ empty containers should be crushed with a stone / stick and hurried deep into soil away from water source. 19.Wash the sprayer and bucket etc with soap water after spraying.
Health and safety precautions during harvesting Provide safety training before harvesting to create awareness for safety risks. Entanglement and caught and crush type of accidents are the most common types with harvesting equipment.
During harvesting ensure that the operators should wear tight clothing and secure their hair to avoid entanglement. Agree clear entanglement and emergency procedures. Never clean, maintain, adjust or clear jams when the machine is on. Stay clear of discharges, outlets, and all moving parts of the machine.
Make sure all guards like belt guards, pully guards etc. are in place. Always read the operators manual of your machine and make yourself familiar with the safety risks. If equipment breaks down make sure that it is properly repaired before it is used again. Improvisation is dangerous and might lead to failure of parts.
