Exploring Toribio Minor National High School Student’s Awareness about Diabetes: A Phenomenological Study

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The prevalence of diabetes is rising globally, and it is becoming increasingly important to understand the level of awareness among the youth. The main purpose of the study is to investigate Toribio Minor National High School student’s awareness of diabetes, focusing on their understanding and perceptions of the disease’s risk and management.

Specifically , this study is sought to answer the following questions: 1. What are the common sources of information for TMNHS students regarding diabetes, and how do these sources influence their understanding of the disease? 2. How do personal experiences with diabetes, whether directly or through family and friends, shape TMNHS student’s perception of the disease? 3. What are the perceived barriers among TMNHS students that prevent effective diabetes management and prevention strategies from being implemented in their lives?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The significance of this study lies in its potential to deepen our understanding of the perceptions and knowledge levels of TMNHS students regarding diabetes. By exploring their awareness, the research can inform the creation of effective educational interventions that could significantly reduce the risk of diabetes among students. Moreover, it can serve as a foundation for future studies aimed at improving health outcomes within the school community.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions of people with type 2 diabetes as related to self-management practices: Results of a cross-sectional study conducted in Luzon, Philippines “Study found that higher knowledge about diabetes was associated with better self-management practices. This suggests that increasing awareness and knowledge among students could potentially lead to better self-care behaviors”, (Ku and Kegels, 2020).

2. Diabetes Mellitus Related Knowledge and Awareness – A Survey among Dental Students “Students lack knowledge about the risk factors associated with diabetes mellitus such as obesity”( Amrithaa , 2020).

3. Assessing the Risk and Awareness of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among Medical Students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia “The study revealed that the majority of participants exhibited a high level of knowledge and awareness concering diabetes” ( Algadheeb , 2023)

Exploring Alternative Healing Practices of Students in Toribio Minor National High School

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Alternative healing practices are forms of treatment that are not based on conventional medicine, such as herbal remedies, acupuncture, massage, and meditation. These practices are often used by people who live in remote areas where access to health care services is limited or unavailable. However, the prevalence, types, and effects of alternative healing practices among students in TMNHS who live in remote areas are not well documented. This study aims to explore the alternative healing practices of students in TMNHS who live in remote areas, and to examine their reasons, beliefs, and outcomes of using these practices.

CENTRAL QUESTION What alternative healing practices are TMNHS students in remote area employing, and what factors influence their choice and efficacy?

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What are the common types of alternative healing practices used by students in TMNHS who live in remote areas? 2. How do students in TMNHS who live in remote areas perceive the effectiveness and safety of alternative healing practices? 3. What are the socio-cultural and economic factors that influence the use of alternative healing practices among students in TMNHS who live in remote areas?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This research is crucial as it sheds light on the reliance on alternative healing practices by students in remote areas, possibly due to limited access to possibly due to limited access to conventional healthcare. The findings can guide policymakers and healthcare system, ensuring culturally sensitive and accessible medical care for all students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 1. Folk Medicine in the Philippines: A Phenomenological Study of Health-Seeking Individuals “ F olk medicine is perceived to be effective alleviating health concerns”( Rondilla et.al).

2. Use of Complementary and Alternative Healthcare Practices Among Persons Served by a Remote Area Medical Clinic “ The factors that influence the choice and utilization of complementary and alternative therapies among the participants such as accessibility, affordability, effectiveness, satisfaction, and personal preference ” ( Barish & Synder ,2008).

3. An ethnobotanical study of medicinal plants and traditional therapies on Batan Island, Philippines “Study demonstrates that many plants species play an important role in local healing practices and that knowledge of traditional medicine is still utilized” (Abe and Othani , 2013).
