At the end of the lesson, you should
be able to familiarize yourself with
the significance of horticulture to
our everyday lives and identify the
personal entrepreneurial
competencies that should be
possessed by successful
entrepreneurs.
Objective:
HORTICULTURE
Horticulture is the branch of
Agriculture which tackles about
the science and art of growing
fruits, vegetables, flowers or
ornamental plants. It is popularly
known as simple gardening or
backyard planting.
It is not only teach
you how to beautify
the environment
itself but how the
process going and
what benefits you
will gain from it.
Benefits of
Horticulture
HEALTH
One of the obvious health
benefits of gardening is the
increased intake of fruits and
vegetables. But the act of
gardening itself, is also a
major health benefit.
HEALTH
Access to urban gardens can
improve health through
nutritious, edible plantings, as
well by getting people outside
and promoting more activity
in their environments.
SOCIAL WELL-
BEING
Gardening programs in
schools encourages an active
lifestyle, children also learn
leadership, teamwork,
communication and
collaboration skills, in addition
to critical and creative
thinking.
LIFESTYLE
Gardening in schools will
enable children to share with
their families the health and
nutrition benefits of eating
fresh fruits and vegetables.

ASPECT
There are many
different economic
benefits from
gardening from saving
money purchasing
food and even on the
utility bills.

Other benefits include
increased
employment from
non-commercial jobs
where producers
include reductions on
the cost of food.

The term
"ENTREPRENEURIAL
COMPETENCIES" refers to the
key characteristics that
should be possessed by
successful entrepreneurs
(farmers/gardeners) to
perform entrepreneurial
functions effectively.
OPPORTUNITY-SEEKER
In horticulture, you are
producing plants, flowers,
fruits and vegetables. As a
gardener, you have the
opportunity to open a new
business and sell those
products and gain a profit.
PERSISTENT
Planting is a very hard
task. You need to be
persistent and undergoes
sacrifices and make
extraordinary effort to
complete a task.
COMMITTED
As the owner, you
accepts full responsibility
for the problems
encountered on your farm
and helps your employees
to get their job done to
satisfy the needs of your
customers.
RISK-TAKER
There are many
hindrances before you
succeed. All you need to
do is to take a risk and be
persistent in solving the
problems on your
farm/garden.
