Microsoft word Is a software used to create and edit text documents. In a word processor, you are presented with a blank sheet. The text is added to the document area. You can format or adjust it to your preference.

Features of a Microsoft word Unlike a basic plain text editor, a word processor offers dozen of additional features that can give your document or other text a more professional appearance. Text formatting – Changes the font, font size, font color, and font style Multimedia – Insert clip art, charts, images, pictures, and video in a document Spelling and grammar – Detects and correct the spelling and grammar errors of document Adjust the layout – modifies the margin and layout of the a document Indentation and lists – sets and format tabs, bullet lists, and number lists

Features of a Microsoft word 6. Insert tables – Adds tables to a document 7. Header and footer – adjust and changes text within the header and footer of a document 8. Thesaurus – shows the synonyms and antonyms of words 9. Auto correct – corrects common errors e.g., Typing “the” and having it autocorrected to “the” 10. Mailers and label – creates mailer or print labels 11. Import data – imports and format data from CSV, Database, or another source. 12. Macros – sets up macros to perform common tasks.

Microsoft word 2010 Environment Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) Displays buttons to perform frequently used commands with a single click. Frequently used commands in Word include Save, Undo, Redo, and Print. For commands that you use frequently, you can add additional buttons to the Quick Access Toolbar. Ribbon Organizes commands on tabs, and then groups the commands by topic for performing related document tasks File Tab Displays Microsoft Office Backstage view, which is a centralized space for all of your file management tasks such as opening, saving, printing, publishing, or sharing a file. Tabs Display across the top of the Ribbon, and each tab relates to a type of activity; for example, laying out a page. Group name Indicate the name of the groups of related commands on the displayed tab.

Microsoft word 2010 Environment Dialog box launcher A small icon that displays to the right of some group names on the Ribbon; it launches a dialog box. Insertion point Indicates, with a blinking vertical line, where text or graphics will be inserted. Word document window Displays the active document. Status bar Displays, on the left side, the page and line number, word count, and the Proof button. On the right side, displays buttons to control the look of the window. Print Layout button The default view, which displays the page borders and the document as it will appear when printed..

Microsoft word 2010 Environment View Options Contains buttons for viewing the document in Print Layout, Full Screen Reading, Web Layout, Outline, or Draft views, and also displays controls to Zoom Out and Zoom In. Zoom Slider The Zoom Slider increases or decreases the viewing area Vertical scroll bar Enables you to move up and down in a document to display text that is not visible. Scroll box Provides a visual indication of your location in a document. You can use the mouse to drag a document up and down to reposition the document. Program-Level Control Buttons The buttons on the right edge of the title bar that minimize, restore or close the program. Title bar Displays the name of the document and the name of the program.

Styles A style is a set of formatting characteristics that you can apply to text in your document to quickly change its appearance. When you apply a style, you apply a whole group of formats in one simple task.

Changing font styles A paragraph style controls all aspects of a paragraph’s appearance, such as text alignment, tab stops, line spacing, and borders, and can include character formatting. A Character style affects selected text within a paragraph, such as the font and size of the text and bold and italic.

Changing font styles Step 1. Select words you want to change by highlighting them. Step 2. click the down arrow or drop-down menu beside the font name in your tools Step 3. use up and down arrows. step 4 . Look through the different fonts Step 5 . as you move your pointer over the font names, you highlighted selection will change to show you what that font will look like

Changing font Size and color You can change the font size using this arrow. The standard size is 12 but you can make it bigger or smaller This is size 30 This is size 40 This is size 50 This is size 60

How to change the font styles This is where your font styles are located This is Bold This is Italic This is underlined

Alignment The computer can align text on the left, right, or center of the page. Select the text that you want to align by highlighting it. Then click on the direction you want it aligned The activated alignment will appear with an orange background

Page layout The page layout tab is the fourth tab from the left. This is where you can customize your document’s layout or physical appearance. Under the page setup section, size, columns, breaks, line numbers, and hyphenation. You can even customize the settings.

Changing Margins Select the  Page Layout tab  in the toolbar at the top of the screen. Then in the  Page Setup group , click on the  Margins  button. This will open a popup menu where you can select one of the preset margins or "Custom Margins".

Thesaurus You can find a word that has the same meaning as the one you are using with the Thesaurus

Word Count Your computer can count how many words you have typed. 1. The total words on your page are shown near the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. 2. To find out how many words you have in one area, select the words by highlighting them. 3. The first number will show you how many words there are in the selection. 4. The second number will tell you the total words on the page(s). 5. You can also go to the review tab and select the word count.

Word Count

Borders and Shading A border is a box around a page or paragraph. Select the words you would like to put a border around by highlighting them. Click on the Home tab. Click on borders. Click on Box on the left-hand side.

Inserting word art Word art is a feature in Microsoft word that allows you to create colorful, eye-catching text by changing letters or words into a picture or graphic Go to your insert tab. Click on WordArt , Click on the wordArt you would like to use

Inserting Page number You can number your pages in Ms. Word. Go to the insert tab. Click on page number Choose if you want your page number at the top or bottom of the page Scroll down to see different page numbers. Click on the type of page number you would like.

Inserting Header A Header is an area of information at the top of each page in a document. Click on the insert tab Click on header Scroll to see choices Choose a header Click on type to type your header Click on close header and footer to add it to your page.
