Tobacco addiction

Slide Content

Tobacco

Tobacco Tobacco is a leafy plant grown around the world. There are many chemicals found in tobacco leaves or created by burning them WHO has categorized tobacco use as one among the five greatest risk factors for mortality.

Nicotine Poisons alkaloid “nicotine” is the chief active ingredient in tobacco Nicotine is the major ingredient which leads to addiction Used as a pesticide

Nicotine Inhaling nicotine stimulates the nervous system and increases blood pressure Continuous use makes blood vessels contracted Nicotine users get addicted just like drug addicts

Chemicals included in Tobacco

Tar Sticky substance when tobacco is burnt Includes Carcinogenic and poisonous chemicals

Benzopyrine Found in coal tar used for construction of roads and tobacco smoke

Carbon Monoxide Affects the functioning of heart ,brain and muscles Reduces the capacity of red blood corpuscles to supply oxygen to other tissues

Formaldehyde Used to prevent tobacco from drying up Formaldehyde is used for preserving dead bodies Affects the skin and digestive system and is carcinogenic

Benzene Used in pesticides and poisonous substances Cause Cancer

Hydrogen Cyanide Most toxic element in tobacco which destroys micro fibers called cilia in the trachea And due to this other toxic substances enter the lungs easily

Cadmium Used in car batteries. Cadmium affects liver, kidney and the brain Doesn’t get removed from the body easily

Ammonia Ammonia is a chemical used for cleaning leads to addiction by increasing the absorption of nicotine

How do people use tobacco People can smoke ,chew, or sniff tobacco. Smoked tobacco products include cigarettes, cigars, bidis , and hookah(Water pipe) Chewed tobacco products include chewing tobacco, snuff, dip and snus , Snuff can also be sniffed

Tobacco and health problems Cancer-Major reason for cancer is tobacco. Tongue,Mouth,Throat,Lungs. Tobacco affects Brain Nicotine in tobacco readily absorbs into the blood when a person uses it

Tobacco and health problems Upon entering the blood nicotine immediately stimulates adrenal gland to release the hormone epinephrine(adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increase blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate.

Tobacco and health problems Studies suggest that other chemicals in tobacco smoke, such as acetaldehyde, may enhance nicotines effect on the brain

Tobacco and health effects

Health Effects Smoking causes stroke and coronary heart disease Even people who smoke fewer than five cigarettes a day can have early signs of cardiovascular disease Smoking damages blood vessels and can make them thicker and grow narrower. This makes your heartbeat faster and your blood pressure go up.

Health Effects Nicotine is addictive, most of the severe health effects of tobacco use comes from other chemicals. Tobacco smoking can lead to lung cancers, leukemia, cataracts, and pneumonia. Smokeless tobacco increases the risk of cancer, especially mouth cancers.

Health Effects Pregnant women who smoke cigarettes run an increased risk of miscarriage, stillborn or premature infants with low birth weight . Smoking while pregnant may also be associated with learning and behavioural problems in exposed children. Low birth weight and preterm birth

Health Effects Restricted head growth Placental problems Increased risk of miscarriage

Health effects of Tobacco Incessant cough Disorders in blood circulation and blood pressure result in heart diseases Organs like tongue ,oral cavity, throat ,vocal chord, lungs, alimentary canal, stomach pancreas and liver have high chances of being affected with cancer

Health Effects Respiratory disorders Bronchitis Emphysema Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease

Health Effects Oral diseases Peridontitis Tooth cavities Pyrrohea Change of colour of teeth,Infection
