Stated and Unstated Details in Reading
Types of Questions for Stated Details in Reading Detail questions ask about details given in the passage. They often contain one of the wh - question words: who, what, when, where, why, how much . Detail questions often begin with the phrases " According to the passage,...“ or "According to the author, ... " When you see these phrases, you know that the information needed to answer the question is directly stated somewhere in the passage To answer detailed questions, you have to locate and identify the information that the question asks about.
General Strategies for Stated Questions : Focus on one or two key words as you read the stem of each questions Scan the passage looking for the key words or synonyms Read around the targeted sentences carefully/closely to understand the context Don't re-read the passage completely. Just look for the key words Choose an answer that restates the idea in the passage
Types of questions for unstated details in Reading These questions ask you to determine which of the four choices is not given in the passage. These questions contain the words NOT, EXCEPT. or LEAST (which are always capitalized). Most common type of its questions: According to the passage, all of the following are true EXCEPT… Which of the following is NOT mentioned/stated in the passage? Which of the following is the LEAST likely ...
General Strategies for Unstated Questions : Choose a Keyword in the question Scan the appropriate place in passage for the key word (or related idea) Read the sentence that contains the key word or idea carefully Look for the answers that are definitely true according to the passage. Eliminate those answers because those are not the correct answer Choose the answer that is not true or not discussed, or not mentioned/stated in the passage
