Farid khan (Bihar, India) (1486–22 May 1545), also know as Sher shah Suri , conferred this name upon him when , as a young man who killed a tiger that leapt suddenly upon the king of Bihar. He was the founder of the Suri Empire  in North India, with its capital at Delhi. An ethnic  Pashtun , Sher Shah took control of the Mughal Empire in 1540.  He died in an accident gun powder explosion in the fort of kalinjar on 13 th may 1545AD. SUR DYNASTY The Sur dynasty was an Afghan family, which ruled in the north of India between 1540 and 1555/1556.

The tomb is an example of indo-Islamic architecture . It was designed by Aliwal khan & built between 1540 & 1545. The tomb rises from a large rectangular tank, the cemented sides of which measure each approximately 1400 feet in length, the main building itself occupies the centre of the tank ,rising to a hight of 122 feets. The tomb is made of red sand stone SHER SHAH SURI TOMB

The base of the mausoleum is an octagon , 56 feet on each side externally or 135 feet in diameter. A gallery, 10 feet 2 inch wide, surrounds the central apartment which is crowned by a large semi-spherical dome, 71 feet in diameter.

The building is situated on a stepped plinth of 300 feet wide and over 30 feet height which is square in plan and comprises the foundation of the composition. The upper surface of this immense sub-structure forms a courtyard, within which stands the mausoleum proper. The Sher shah Suri tomb is a three storied structure.

On the exterior, the terrace, on which the tomb stands, is ornamented by bold octagonal pavilions, Over lower storey projects a wide eave surmounted by a crenellated parapet, above ,the two upper storey are decorated by means of pillared kiosks.

Island tomb with no access to the main land and visitors were provided ramps A beautiful garden and grand tree line path leads up to the main structure was constructed later in 1881 . Sher shah Suri tomb's design is simple, a big dome on a chamber of span 22m.

The main tomb is built on a octagonal plan surrounded by verandas Arches and doorways carved with calligraphed verses from The Quran.

In the center of the tomb lies Hasan khan the emperor's father along with The Emperor and his 23 general . Chhatris at each of its corner.

There are stairways on each side leading down to the lake. It is called as the second T aj M ahal of I ndia due to its similar layout.

In the heart of busy trading city lies the tomb of The Emperor. The 15th century emperor of India Farid- ud- din sher shah suri buried in 1545 AD. Sher Shah Suri who had risen to become most powerful ruler of the subcontinent , since Ashok. The emperor had build the Sher Shah Suri tomb for himself. He also built the old fort (Delhi) and the mosque with in it.
