CHIROPRACTIC THERAPY

HISTORY OF Chiropractic Therapy
•The word ‘chiropractic’ comes from the Greek words cheir
(meaning ‘hand’) and praktos(meaning ‘done’), i.e. Done by
Hand.
•The name was chosen by the developer of chiropractic,Daniel
David Palmer.
•Palmer performed the initial chiropractic adjustment in September
1895.
•Palmer examined ajanitor who had become deaf 17 years prior after he
felt something “give” in his back. Palmerexamined the area and gave a
crude “adjustment” to what was felt to be a misplaced vertebra inthe
upper back. The janitor then observed that his hearing improved.
5

HISTORY OF Chiropractic Therapy
•From that first adjustment, DD Palmer continued to develop
chiropractic and in 1897 establishedthe Palmer School of Cure,
now known as the Palmer College of Chiropractic, in
Davenport,Iowa, where it remains today.
•Following the first adjustment, many people became interested
inPalmer’s new science and healing art.Among his early
students were Palmer’s son, BartlettJoshua (BJ), as well as
members of the older healing arts of medicine and
osteopathy. The first state law licensing chiropractors was passed
in 1913, and by 1931, 39 states had givenchiropractors legal
recognition.

Chiropractic Philosophy
•Holismassumes that health is affected by everything in an
individual's environment; some sources also include a
spiritual orexistentialdimension.
•Reductionism in chiropractic reduces causes and cures of
health problems to a single factor, vertebral subluxation.
•Homeostasisemphasizes the body's inherent self-healing
abilities. Chiropractic's early notion of innate intelligence
can be thought of as a metaphor for homeostasis.[30]

TypesofChiropractors
Straight chiropractors
adhere to the philosophical
principles set forth by D.D.
and B.J. Palmer, and retain
metaphysical definitions
and vitalistic qualities.

TypesofChiropractors
Mixer chiropractors "mix"
diagnostic and treatment
approaches from
chiropractic, medical and/or
osteopathic viewpoints and
make up the majority of
chiropractors.

VertebralSubluxations
In 2005, the chiropractic subluxation was
defined by the World Health Organization as
"a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion
segment in which alignment, movement
integrity and/or physiological function are
altered, although contact between joint
surfaces remains intact.

Scope of Practice
•Chiropractors emphasize the conservative management of
theneuromusculoskeletal systemwithout the use of medicines or
surgery, with special emphasis on the spine.
•Back and neck pain are the specialties of chiropractic but many
chiropractors treat ailments other than musculoskeletal issues.
•There is a range of opinions among chiropractors: some
believed that treatment should be confined to the spine, or
back and neck pain; others disagreed.

Chiropractic therapy
can improve the following:
•1) Neck and Head: Relief from headaches and migraines as well
as relief from head pains, whiplash and acute and chronic neck
pain. It promotes healthier discs and also relieves
temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ).
•2) Breathing and Lungs: Relieves stress from lungs, improves
respiratory function, and decreases symptoms of asthma, sinusitis
and allergies.
•3) Cardiovascular: Allows for greater nerve supply to heart and
coronary arteries, improves circulation, less nerve stress and
stabilizes blood pressure.
13

Chiropractic therapy
can improve the following:
•4) Digestion and Elimination: Improves digestion and elimination
as well as function of throat, stomach, duodenum, small and
large intestines, colon and anus. It relieves ulcers and promotes a
greater nerve supply to the entire digestive tract, liver and gall
bladder. Chiropractic wellness care can also help with kidney,
bladder and colon disorders and dysfunctions.
•5) Upper Extremities: Relief from carpal tunnel syndrome,
shoulder, arm and hand problems.
•6) Lower Extremities: Hips, knees, feet are more balanced; less
pressure on nerves and joints; better balance; improved posture;
relief from sciatica and leg pain. 14

Chiropractic therapy
can improve the following:
•7) Brain, Stress and Psychological Effects: Increased blood supply to
the brain; improved concentration; reduced anxiety and irritability,
depression, tiredness and clumsiness; and more energy.
•8) Immune System: Improved nerve supply to immunity organs,
including spleen, tonsils, appendix and lymphoid tissue. Overall
immune system function is enhanced.
•9) Overall Effects of Body Structure: Less pressure on body in general;
joints are more aligned; weight is carried more evenly; better
posture; more balance and energy; muscles are strengthened and
balanced; trigger points and hot spots are removed; increased
flexibility.
15

Chiropractic Treatment Technique
•The most common therapeutic procedure performed by Doctors
of Chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,”
16

Phases of Chiropractic Care
•Relief –This is the phase where pain is the main concentration. The
chiropractor will recommend frequent visits to control the pain. During this
phase, hot and cold therapy may be advised along with home stretching.
•Corrective –This phase centers on correcting the problem. Most
misalignments have been present for a long time and need time to be
corrected. The chiropractor is training the spine for proper positioning. Core
strengthening exercises will be given at this time to complement spinal
adjustments.
•Wellness –The final phase of chiropractic care is wellness. This phase allows
you to participate in all of the fun activities that you enjoy without feeling
“down and out”. The wellness phase keeps motion in the spine, allows the
chiropractor to respond quickly to “flare ups” and decreases healing time.
17

An estimated 19.5
million people visit
doctors of
Chiropractic in the
United States each
year.
There is 1
chiropractor for
every 5,000 citizens
in the USA today.
Spinal adjusting has
been traced back to
the time of
Hippocrates

TERMINOLOGIES
◉Chiropractic represents a distinct natural, holistic,
vitalistic, conservative and rational health care
paradigm that is both philosophically logical and
scientifically valid.
◉Chiropractic is based on the now scientifically proven
hypothesis that proper structure of the spine is
required for proper function of the nervous system as
it relates to the control and regulation of global
physiology and health.

TERMINOLOGIES
◉Spinal Manipulationis the application of controlled
force to a joint, moving it beyond the normal range of
motion in an effort to aid in restoring health.
Manipulation may be performed as a part of other
therapies or whole medical systems, including
chiropractic medicine, massage, andnaturopathy.

TERMINOLOGIES
◉Osteopathic manipulationis a type of manipulation
practiced by osteopathic physicians. It is combined
with physical therapy and instruction in
properposture. (https://www.brainline.org/article/manipulative-
