OSTEOPATHIC THERAPY
HISTORY OF Osteopathic Therapy
•Osteopathy (also called Osteopathic medicine) is a
specific form of manual medicine which was developed
by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, in the middle of the 1800’s in the
United States of America. Dr. Still founded the first school
for osteopathy (1874) and the principles and philosophy of
osteopathy rapidly spread across the word.
•In the United States, osteopathic training runs parallel with
allopathic medicine and American osteopaths enjoy the
same professional opportunities as American allopathic
doctors.
5
HISTORY OF Osteopathic Therapy
•The osteopathic principles that Dr. Taylor published can be
resumed as follows:
•The reciprocal nature of structure and function
•The body is a biological unit, the whole is greater than the sum
of its parts.
•The natural auto-correction mechanism.
6
Principles of Osteopathy
•Osteopathy provides a broad range of approaches for maintaining health and managing disease.
•A human is a dynamic functional unit. One’s state of health is influenced by the body, mind and spirit. It possesses self-regulatory mechanisms and body function and structure are interrelated at all levels.
•It applies current medical and scientific knowledge. Osteopathy is a patient-centered and not a disease-centered healthcare system.

Osteopathic medicine Models
1.The biomechanical structure/function relationship
model: here osteopathy strives for good mechanical
function and posture, particularly addressing the
musculoskeletal system.
9
Osteopathic medicine Models
2.The respiratory/circulatory structure/function
relationship model: addresses dysfunctions in the
mechanics and the circulation and flow of body fluids
to provide the body with oxygen and nutrients.

Osteopathic Models: Treatment

•Circulatory-Respiratory Model
•Neuro-Endocrine-Immune Model
•Bio-energetic Model
•Psychosomatic Model
